I didn't have any trouble. There were instructions that came in the box and on the amazon site, but I'm not sure you need any. You just unscrew the black thingamabobs and put the screw inside of it, then screw the whole thing into the anchor you have hammered into the drilled wall. The string wraps around the end of the black thing, then you screw the "lid" on top of the string. I used my husband's level and placed them one foot apart from each other vertically. It's sturdy and easily holds my watercolor paintings in my arts and crafts room, and my paper is thick.
