Playing Keyboard Bass Lines Left-Hand Technique for Keyboards

Good for Some
Most jazz piano books give a couple of pages to this important skill so this dedicated book fills a real need. To create piano bass lines can be trickier than it first seems. Unlike a solo, a walking bass line doesn't pause between phrases. This means when you are playing and creating on the fly you really need to have your stuff together. The bass line outlines the changes. It is very important. In my opinion this book's greatest shortcoming is that it doesn't incorporate the R/H very much. It has been my experience that when I have to play a bass line in my left, I am usually required to play "Piano" in my right. So, comping bass lines is very much a two handed exercise - the way I most often encounter it.I would have liked to see more examples of playing bass and comping chords with the right hand.I think I would have been better served by buying a book on jazz bass. Something like Ron Carter's Creating a Jazz Bass Line, or Rufus Reid's book. But don't be deterred by this review. We are all at different levels. Some people, like me, want to practise one thing, someone else, another. If you just need left hand bass lines, sans right, this may be just what you need.

Very informative book
Great book, though not a pianist I enjoy learning basic bass lines an 7th chords (especially the Latin exercises) have other books by John Valerio and find them helpful also, would recommend this book for any student because the exercises Sound good, and makes one want too learn more about this very versatile form of playing.

Makes learning fun!
I love this book. I have been re-teaching myself piano in the last five years. This book has been helpful not only for getting my left hand more comfortable in juxtaposition with the right, but in understanding chord shapes and positions. I love that it's written for a shuffle feel all through the book. It may be a bit too advanced for me, but it's not daunting. I haven't listened to the audio at this point but might give it a go.

A MUST at this price for Every Jazz pianist
Sets a foundation for the pianist to begin playing bass lines.I have been playing for a long time, but have been unable toget it together with my left hand for a walking bass. This book gives the fundamentals and just enoughinteresting variations to give you a standard repertoire, and a springboard to exploring more.It is also helpful for any aspiring jazz musician on anyinstrument. The scales and leading notes used can be applied toplaying smooth flowing improvization. Most samples are presented in two or three different keys, but it is still up the the student to everything them in all keys.Well worth the price - a fraction of the cost of a piano lessonfor a life's changing technique, even if it's not a ton of material.

This is actually quite useful for bass practices in general
This is actually quite useful for bass practices in general. The turnarounds are solid, albeit standard & every keyboard player should know them if they plan on backing up the bass.
