Excellent
As might be expected from the Grove, this is quite a straightforward guide to the operas, with summaries of the plots, Verdi's life, and so on. There are short critical sections (particularly in the Introduction). I would have preferred more interpretation. It lacks a certain Verdian pizzazz. For that, perhaps Wills' new Verdi's Shakespeare is the ticket for three of the operas. But this is a good guide (especially for those early operas you will never get to see!!)

A Real Bargain for the Bicentennary
Received book In brand new condition in a flash. Seems to contain a fair to good amt. of pithy info in a slim volume, which is ideal as a quick reference source when needed. It can serve to whet the novice's appetite for further reading. I'd rate this purchase as a real winner. *Q
