Keep it real
What a pile of excuses and negativity I'm reading in several of these reviews. To the lady complaining about "too much homework," I'm sorry but there's no book in the world that will do the work for you. To the lady with the sneering late-teens daughter, it's clear why you bought this book in the first place; I wish you luck and encourage you to keep working with these new techniques and realizations. And to the female psychologist, I ask is it really professional to call another professional "creepy" with allegations of lurking around playgrounds? I also point out the misogynistic comment is offensive to the female co-author and find your entire post to be mean-spirited and petty. Presumably you see only female patients and refer all inquiries from prospective male patients to male therapists. In your zeal to post a review before you even hit the half-way point, you overlook good advice and information in this book, which was not written as a peer-to-peer dissertation, but rather is for lay people who are interested in better mother-daughter relationships. Don't over-think it.

some decent ideas but mysogynistic too
As a female psychologist, daughter (of course) and mother - I was curious what this book could offer to help mothers and daughters I see in my practice. From the therapeutic perspective, his description of the 3 orientations for communication is worthwhile but while I'd like to be able to offer this book to my clients, I've found the writer's tone to be mysogynistic and condescending.I'm not sure that a woman hasn't written a book about father/son relationships but I found Dr. Sophy's male psychiatrist perspective to be judgmental rather than compassionate and in areas related to biology - just plain wrong. When he makes comments about the effect of estrogen or condemns a new mother who has struggled to conceive when she becomes upset by an MD telling her that she can't breastfeed - he really skates on thin ice. He then claims that the mom was selfishly pursuing her own agenda to breastfeed, and asserts that formula is just as nourishing. Where is he getting his info???I also found it more than a little bit creepy that he seems to be lurking around playgrounds looking for moms who have done something he can find to be shameful. Anyhow, I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book but I had to voice my estrogen ire before any other women get triggered or misled.Perhaps in a later edition a La Leche mom can help him get his facts straight!

Excellent book
Has some good ideas for mothers/daughters as well as for professionals who work with them. Can't wait for this author to publish another book.

Very insightful!
It’s an easy ready. It’s relatable. It’s so true it emotionally takes you for a ride. It sure puts things into perspective. I feel like I need to read it several times as a reminder.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER REALITY CHECK
There are so many misconceptions about family relationships. This leads to a total disconnect when something dramatic happens, and people are left disconcerted, immobilized, not knowing how to handle the situation. This book presents a look at the dynamics of mother/daughter relationships, which at times are stormy, and totally predictable! So, education is a powerful tool when circumstances necessitate a hard, truthful look at what is really happening. This book provides an answer.

A must read for anyone Mother with a daughter. My suggestion is start reading the book when your daughter is 10 years old. Never too late to read it. There is so much you can incorporate to help with the mother/daughter relationship.
