Formulas and process well covered. The language is archaic.
Many formulas are provided for solutions and the process is covered in great detail. Unfortunately, the language is archaic and sometimes difficult to understand.

Excellent - but not for everyone
I find this book to be absolutely fascinating. It is well written and an excellent source of information on how things used to be done years ago. But, I have a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, so I understand and enjoy all the chemistry presented in the book. For someone who is a gunsmith without a knowledge of chemistry, and is looking for a manual on how to do blueing/browning without a lot of technical information, this is probably not what they are looking for. Also this book was written in the 1930's, so a lot of the chemicals mentioned are too hazardous from both a user safety and an environmental perspective to use today.

true gun blue
This book explicitly is refreashing. Its not a picture book. If you can read buy it. If not then buy another book. Great information, I plan to build my own blue/brown/blackening system. The information is right out of Smith/Wesson etc of the old west. These are your best library books. Save them keep them and best of all try them yourself. Experience the difference, Its clean and true to life not a s*** book. I love good gunbooks that are true. This was true and works for me. E-mail if it doesn't work. I will apologize personally.

Useful, outdated, overly wordy
This book contains a lot of good information, but most of it is outdated, calling for chemicals that are next to impossible to obtain today. Like most old do it yourself books, it makes too much use of words and not enough use of pictures. If you want to put a good, slow-rust bluing on a metal surface, simply buy and follow the instructions for Laurel Mountain Forge's solution.

Published in 1935, but still very relevant!
Published in 1935, but still very relevant. Gets into the chemistry of how bluing solutions are made. Very interesting "British English". A useful reference. Cheap at twice the price!

Blueing and Browning Referance
This book came highly recommended as referance material and it has not disappointed. The only reason not to give it five stars is that the print is somewhat small.

Only of interest to those that are considering going into the blacking/gunsmith trade. A lot of the chemicals used are not readily attainable today due to laws/EU restrictions
