The Conga Drummer's Guidebook

Not for begginers
This is a great book for the intermediate conga player who wants to learn and practice written music. The first stages of the book are dedicated to clave and bell patterns. The book is very educational for the conga player, who is looking to expand on the knowledge of rhythm.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in advancing to the next level. Thank you for reading..

Thorough, clear, progressive method.
The author’s unique understanding of Afro-Cuban phrasing gets the sound right to my ear. With that understanding, the student can progress through the exercises and examples to authentic playing.

Great learning guide
This book is a fantastic guide for learning to play the congas. It begins by explaining core concepts and quickly moves on to more advanced concepts. The real beauty of this guide is in the passion and dedication of it's author (Michael Spiro) and in the clarity of the writing. It is also great fun reading about michael's fascinating adventures in his study of Latin and African drumming. He has met and played with many of the luminaries in the field.

Great study aid
I really enjoy this book. Michael Spiro's explanations are very clear, and make good sense to me. I recommend also his book "Language of the Master's" - good for readers and advanced congueros/as.

Great Player but - Book is just OK.
Mr Spiro is an awesome conga drummer. I expected this book to be great. His book is just OK. I don't care for his attempt at re-inventing the wheel with words he comes up with and the way he explains things. A bit disappointing work from such a talented conga drummer. I would not recommend this book.

Great resource
This is the most comprehensive Conga Method book on the market. I have learned a ton from it, though it does not replace a good instructor.

Insightful, clever and didactic
This is the one of the most insightful conga tutor books around. Michael Spiro is the man. If you were not brought up in Cuba, there are some subtleties of Cuban rhythm that take some working out. For example, the fact that most Cuban rhythm patterns seem to start 1 beat before the main melody, or that many strokes have a triplet feel, or that the time signature is tough to pin down. All is explained in this book. Michael Spiro gets it - and he get's that most non-Cubans don't get it. He has a very didactic and thoughtful manner and this book contains useful theory as well as practical exercises and background. It is not for beginners and it might even put you off. I had it for a couple of months before I could get into it.HOWEVER, just google this guys name on YouTube and you fill find several examples of his instructional video clips. I think his ability to explain Latin rhythm to most of us who have 4/4 engrained on our brains, is unrivaled.
