Superb Material! Supportive Publisher!
I upgraded this rating to 5 stars and wish I could go higher! What a pleasure to do business with Mcgraw-Hill and with Amazon!BUY THIS BOOK! I HAVE ADDED MY UPDATES IN UPPER CASE.Brilliant book. DVD and CDs worth their weight in gold. But I ran into three glitches:1: I have faciltated purchase for at least a dozen students -- not all with Amazon, but Amazon is my preferred provider. Price is right, delivery is prompt, but so far the count is 3 and rising on problems with DVDs in Amazon acquisitions. They do not play properly. This difficulty could be a deal breaker. Will update review as we troubleshoot. So far, it's a headache. UPDATE: ONE CASE INVOLVED THE REMOTE, NOT THE DVD. THE PUBLISHER SENT REPLACEMENT DVDs TO THE OTHER TWO. NO MORE HEADACHES! HAPPY FACES ALL AROUND.2: DVD identifies incorrect examples by including the word "incorrect" in the exercise lead in. Redundancy and emphasis would help --an X or red type or flashing screen - any enhancement to reinforce that some initial examples are in fact examples of problems, things NOT to do. (Negative examples/directions are problematic in instructional design anyhow.) Sure, you can talk your way past this stumbling block in class. But it's a nuisance, and the eager student will already be repeating the bad examples as you speak. GOOD TO KNOW PUBLISHER IS OPEN TO USER COMMENTS! AND I CONCEDE THAT THE NEGATIVE EXAMPLES HELP STUDENTS TO RECOGNIZE THE SOUND THAT THEY ARE MAKING VS. THE SOUND THEY WANT TO MAKE.3: Not enough time for learners to say the sentences they are supposed to articulate on the DVD, unless they have already memorized them, have a fast finger on the pause control, or are already so fluent as not to need the book. Was it necessary to trim the response window due to time constraints on the DVD? I don't know. Yes, one can tell the class to have the book open every time they use the DVD. Yes, eventually they will know the sentences by heart. But the lack of a "repeat" window throws them off off stride. It's easier to use an open book with audio only than with video. The CDs are extremely helpful. (More than helpful: a treasure trove of demonstration.)This package is beyond excellent: a true gem of a teaching tool. I HEAR THE DIFFERENCE IN THE VOICES OF THE STUDENTS -- AND SO DO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO NOW TALK TO THEM MORE BECAUSE THEY CAN UNDERSTAND THEM!

The 2nd edition has streaming content, not a DVD or CD. RTFM!
Update: I purchased the second edition of this book FOR THE VERY REASON THAT IT DID NOT HAVE A CD! My tablet does not have a slot for a CD, so having the 12 hours of content streaming via a web link is so much better. Plus it allows for more audio and video than the previous book. I can't understand people giving bad reviews for the reason that there is no CD -- that's not a flaw, that's a feature! There are explicit instructions on the inside front cover on how to download the publisher's language lab app too. But hey, if you can't be bothered to read directions, don't blame the product. My review of the usefulness of this for accent reduction stands, but the new edition is even better because there are more examples to watch and listen to.After viewing the DVD and reading this book, I am buying it for a friend who has a thick Eastern European accent, which, while charming to his friends, he feels has impeded his ability to attract clients in the United States (he is an engineering professional). This may not be fair, it may not be respecting of diversity, but it is a reality in his business world. When people learn English, the focus is on teaching vocabulary and grammar - leaving learners to acquire pronunciation on their own, by exposure and by trial and error. This book finally explains the anatomical mechanics of pronunciation -- the tongue, teeth, and lip placement necessary to make certain English sounds. The explanations and exercises in the books and on the audio shorten EXPONENTIALLY the time needed to pronounce the vocabulary words most ESOL teachers focus on imparting. There seems to be nothing else like it on the market. Perfecting Your English Pronunciation is a great resource for business executives, medical professionals, educators, and anyone whose career depends on the ability to be understood, in English, by clients. It is a great investment at a very reasonable price.

Mysteries of pronunciation made crystal clear!
This is a FABULOUS book! I tutor English as a Second Language to Mexican and Japanese students. For a long time I struggled hard to try to figure out how I pronounce difficult sounds in English, with no success. I was absolutely thrilled when I found this book. Susan Cameron explains and demonstrates EXACTLY how the mouth and tongue form the sounds of English and BINGO! My students really GET it now. The mysteries of pronunciation are made crystal clear! I use it for 20 minutes of pronunciation practice at the beginning of every lesson. The DVD is invaluable. There really is no use talking about how to pronounce sounds, here you can SEE how. Susan uses one hand to represent either the roof of the mouth or the bottom of the mouth and the other to represent exactly what the tongue is doing inside the mouth. The audio includes sentences, and the book has long lists of words for further practice.I only wish there were instructions for more sounds, especially the ones my Japanese students find difficult. Also the sentences use very sophisticated vocabulary, words that less educated Americans don't even know! So I wish the sentences provided used vocabulary just above my students' level, rather than far, far too advanced. Sometimes I define the words for my students, but most of the time I ask them not to worry about it and just practice the sounds.

i was amazed of how descriptive, practical and easy to use this book is.it's straight to the point nothing redundant about it.for years i've been seaching an easier way to help with exactly the kind of problems this book adresses. this is the top problem for mostlearners of English and other languages and it is not easy or fun to find ways to adress this problem. once i started skimming through thebook a knew it was the one.

Download audio

Very good, though for some mysterious reason it 'frames' the book as a boon for business-people. However, that's just a couple of spots, like in the Intro. All the important chapters have nothing to do with that, they just concentrate on the pronunciation issues and, near the end, word stress and sentence stress. The DVDs are a bit of a hash. My ten year old grandson can format a movie onto a playable DVD but it seems to elude this publisher. Doesn't seem to have occurred to them to just load it as an mp4 onto the CDs along with the audio tracks so people can play it on their computers. I had to extract the movie myself. But still worth buying.
