Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we like to stay ahead with the Hummvee Baggy Short.

    Outstanding Quality, Incomprehensible Sizing

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2014*

These shorts are amazing, which is the only reason I bothered trying to buy them THREE times without just giving up and moving along to other options. The quality, durability, and features are exactly what we're looking for in a pair of MTB shorts. However, I don't know what population sample the manufacturer used to come up with their sizing (hobbits, maybe?). I am 5'10", 175lbs, with a 35" - 36" waist. I normally wear a Large when buying shorts, as I like a semi-loose fit. I started with a L and couldn't even get them snapped. Then I tried the XL; could barely get snapped but felt like I was being squeezed like a tube of tooth paste. Finally I ordered the largest size available - the XXL. The liner finally feels okay, and I'm able to snap them closed relatively easily, but it's still a somewhat snug fit.If you have a waist around 36", get the XXL without even thinking about it. If your waist is greater than 38", I would move along to other shorts.

Good quality....Shorts run small.....Liner runs big.

Construction of the shorts is very good. As others state, the sizing is a bit of a mystery. I am 6'2" with a 36" waist. I ordered the XXL and the shorts fit well but the inner liner is slightly too big so the shorts run small but the liner runs big. I bought these to have some comfortable biking shorts for my gravel bike knowing theyre mainly used for Mt bikes. If you do that, the rear material is a wee bit slippery on a road bike saddle. they are well worth the money. I would have given 5 stars if the liners were sized correctly so you dont have to re buy the right size.UPDATE: Riding these shorts longer than 30 miles or so, any exposed skin in contact with edges of the short legs will take a beating. I did an 82 mile ride with these and the tops of my knees were raw not to mention 7 hours of listening to PFFFT PFFFT PFFFT as you pedal. This is coming from someone who mainly mountain biked and tried transitioning on a road bike with the same gear. These shorts are great for anything under 25 miles or so or if you know youll be going into places where running in wearing a full road bike kit would be weird (basically anywhere in public if youre not sitting on your bike). I thought I could make a pair of shorts work for something theyre not intended for and ended up getting the proper attire.

    Good shorts, need better hardware

Three or four stars. For an $85 piece of clothing, three stars.Nice looking, comfortable shorts with plenty of pocket space. The black and gray camo matches my Specialized Rockhopper. Completely comfortable to ride in. They don’t rub uncomfortably anywhere.I wear pants with a 32” waist, and these shorts in a Medium are the right size. These are warmer than what I have been riding in, that being a pair of denim Wrangler shorts and a pair of Fruit of the Loom briefs. Warmer is the reason I bought them. I’m trying to extend my riding season into winter. Today, at 40 degrees and damp (the ride to work) or at 55 degrees in a steady rain (lunch hour), they were plenty warm, noticeably warm, with the side vents open. I think I could ride at 35 degrees and not be underdressed. They could have improved these shorts by using a heavier gauge of zipper on the pockets. The smallness and delicateness of the zipper requires a two-handed operation to avoid binding in some locations. I’m going to see whether a few drops of Pedro’s Ice Wax on the zippers can enable one-handed operation. I’d rate the zippers as okay.I don’t like the “Clickfast” attachment of the liner. The attachment system consists of four sets of three tiny snaps. When I put on the liner first and then the shorts, it was not easy or fast to find all 12 tiny snaps. Then, once I had 9 of them snapped and I started working on the last set of 3, the waistband elastic proved to be strong enough to unsnap another set of 3 I already snapped. I am not stupid enough to go back and forth again, so I took off the entire assembly, snapped all 12 snaps, zipped the fly and fastened the waist button. Then I wiggled into the fully fastened assembly. When I tried getting in with the button undone and the fly zipper down, some of the “Clickfast" snaps unsnapped. Four or eight bigger snaps might be easier to deal with than 12 tiny ones. I don’t know. I don’t get paid to design bicycle shorts. I pay people $85 to design a pair of bicycle shorts, and I rate this attachment system as poor.Nothing wrong with the waist band button or the zipper fly. The liner does not have a fly and is "Clickfast" attached to the outer shell, so it's over the top or drop the whole assembly when, you know.Very lightweight belt. I don’t know what it’s for. I don't use it.(update) While I like these okay for aggressive trail riding, I have come to dislike them for long stretches in the saddle. At the end of a 2 hour rail-trail ride, a pair of Wrangler shorts and Fruit of the Loom briefs doesn't leave my d!&k completely numb, but these do. I think I am going to put away the liner and not get it out any more. The softness of it seems to allow the liner to press into nerve areas, whereas a hard seat and a thin later of cotton doesn't. The liner is a pain to deal with on account of the 12 tiny snaps coming unsnapped anyway.
