Optional-you could buy gypsum and amend the soil first but it costs more for gypsum. Or you could add 1-2 cups Perlite to the mixture above-then mix it with your clay soil & it will amend. Just mix or till in evenly-maybe this cover a 2x3 area. I've had to amend about an acre of land using this method to help grass grow and landscape shrubs & flowers. If you are planting something-you may also use Calloways hard wood mulch and add a little peat moss. Instead of the Scotts top soil ( because Scotts is mulch as well with a tiny bit of peat moss & a tiny bit of Osmocote). **Q: what is the PH value?** A: Sphagnum peat moss has an average PH of around 4.0 (Iowa State University Agriculture web search), which is on the acidic side. Mix 50/50 with native soil in each planting hole and top with two inches to mulch as appropriate. **Q: What is the quality of this peat moss to command such a price. Is it different then the 3.4 ft3 bail you can buy just about anywhere for $12?** A: I can buy this exact same product, in this size, at my local hardware store for under $20. It's a bit of a puzzler. Found a website where you can "save by buying wholesale": $1050 for a pallet of 30 bags, almost twice it would cost down at the hardware store.
