Testing the Ice: A True Story About Jackie Robinson

Great story with beautiful illustrations.
I had this soft cover book in my classroom to use as a mentor text to teach about plot. I lost it, and ordered the hard cover. So beautiful. This book is great for grades 4-8 in terms of teaching, but a wonderful read for second grade up. One of my favorites.

Terrific read
This is an inspiring read for kids who like baseball. It’s a good read for kids who do not like baseball, since it is about Jackie Robinson, but not primarily about baseball. It is about courage and commitment to family.

LOVE!
I love this sweet story, and my 1st grade students really enjoyed it, too! I bought this as a resource / read-aloud book, but some of my students can read the book with a little help on some words. It has inspired them to learn more about Jackie Robinson. The illustrations are beautiful and help tell the story. The book arrived in excellent condition.

The best of Jackie, in words and drawings
This book is an exploration of how Jackie Robinson overcame one of his personal fears in order to be a good parent to his daughter and her friends. It adds a very human dimension to the Jackie Robinson "story" that many baseball fans do not know, and further enhances the legend of this extraordinary man. It is written and illustrated for children, and my two grandkids (6 and 8) loved it from the first page. Unlike many children's books, there appears to have been close collaboration between the author and the illustrator, and the illustration themselves frequently take up an entire page. I recommend it without reservation, and have reread it (by request) to my grandchildren several times already.
