Worthy of Petrarca's Work
The complete edition of something called the 'Il Canzoniere' is very rare. Even though it is the most successful book of love poetry ever to be made, it is mostly available in the shortened form, where usually about 50 poems are included. If you are looking for the complete edition of over 300 poems, this is the book to go for. It has a comprehensive introduction, with biographical data and literary criticism of Petrarch's work. Most poems are provided with more translations, giving you the sense of what can hide behind the 14th century verses. All in all, this is definitely a good choice for people with affinity towards Petrarch's work. The only bad side of this book is that poems are presented without pauses (empty rows) between quatrains and terzets, giving a rather confusing visual look and loosing some of the sense if not understood correctly.

Great for a 19th century take on Petrarch
A good scan, though problematic in indexing. The life of Petrarch that is one of the features in the front pages is quite interesting. The translations offered are from a variety of translators. I found the rhymes strained -- would prefer blank verse translations accompanied by the original Italian.

interesting book
I got this book to understand the inspiration behind the tarot, which is supposedly "The Triumphs" of Petrarch. This book contains the triumphs and more by the author.

And the winner is...
The Sonnets are here. They begin at location 2696. Amazon, I love you. For pocket change an interested reader can amass a colossal private library, a profound reserve of genius whose depths, however plumbed and rifled, will always contain, for each individual, far more secrets than discoveries.

For discovering Petrarch, this can help.
I hadn't read anything before about this poet. I'd probably seen his portrait and read quotes, but I'd never read him. This book may help with that. Hope you enjoy it, too.

Not the Sonnets
This text is not the sonnets. It is a biography -- The Life of Petrarch. Maybe the sonnets are at the back, but the table of contents doesn't work as clickable links, and after clicking over 100 pages thinking that the biography might be just a forward I gave up on ever finding the sonnets.

Interesting collection of works by a great historical character, much in demand as advisor and negotiator.
From time to time I reacquaint myself with the works of this great man. Though I am limited to reading them in translation, the range is enormous. There are the famous obsessive love sonnets concerning his unattainable Laura which fall flat in English. I found that reading French and Italian translations in other sources reveal more of the Troubadour art of subtle puns and wordplay using sonorities fashionable at the time he lived. Some favourites are missing but there are other items making this is an interesting collection of works giving a more complete picture of his life.I have not yet read the whole book but sadly one of his most enjoyable works appears to be missing - an extended metrical letter thanking a Cardinal for presenting him with a dog to keep Petrarch company in his retirement. It is composed in the persona of the dog and contrasts its earlier pampered life at the papal court at Avignon with its quieter life as guard and companion at its new master's rural retreat.

Good little collection. The book could be organised better.

Lots of Great Content Crammed in there but Get Your Electron Microscope out to be able to Read It
Pros: More content available in this book than many others. Price is competitive.Cons: formatting is nonexistent so poem lines are crushed together into one large stanza blob, text is microscopic; really really small so that some people will literally require a magnifying glass to read. This is not professional quality compiling. So, if you are reading this book and the page appears to be moving, it's really not moving, it is only the protons and electrons you see spinning around an atom nucleus, since you needed a microscope to read the tiny sized text. The book is not produced by an actual publishing house with distributor; it is produced by vanity press by some guy who collected all the content and shot-gunned it into a file and smashed the "print" button. You will not find the publishing years and other related information at the front of the book. So, buy the book if you want the content and aren't too picky over formatting. If you are paying your good hard earned money expecting this book to be formatted by the likes of Penguin or Oxford Press, then you might get rather angry at the difference.I am able to still use this book which has lots of content, so I will give the rating some stars and not damn it altogether.
