If there's no music playing, you hear everything around you fine, just less. Even when playing at a good volume, outside noise bleeds in under normal speaking volumes. There is some noise muffling so that you get really good, pure sound out of them. I'm not super experienced in the fancy headphones and ear buds, so to my untrained ear, these are great. I would get them again in a heartbeat. And it freaked me out!!! I'm super gluing it. Downgrading to 4 stars. These are excellent IEMs and I am enjoying every minute of it. I do a lot of recording and i own(ed) Sennheiser HD380 pro, Sennheiser SE-215 IEMS. They're great but there's not a lot of bass when I need it. I was looking for another pair that have good balance but can also deliver excellent bass when needed. My reference tracks are Hiatus Kaiyote, Moonchild, and Thundercat audio. The BASN delivers low bass and what i find great about it is forgetting that I'm wearing them and just enjoying music for hours. I saw youtube review of IEMs and the reviewer picked this due to it's excellent bass delivery.
