Found out that my oven temperature is out, I've always suspected it was. Always liked the quality of the OXO stuff. Thought briefly of looking for an over thermometer of this type at the dollar store but thought better of it as I wouldn't have known if the temperature it was reporting was accurate. Would definitely buy it again.

I got a new oven, and kept getting random results. One dish would come out fine, but the next would be black around the edges, burnt. So, I looked online and found several groups who tested oven thermometers, and this came out #1 or #2 in every test. So I got one, and spent a day testing my oven. I did other things all day long, and checked the oven about every 15-20 minutes. I set the oven for 170°F (lowest for my range), put the thermometer in the middle of the oven, and started the oven. I gave it 30 minutes, to heat and stabilize, then took 3 readings, about 10 minutes apart, and wrote it down. Then I turned it up to 200°F, and repeated the process, taking 3 readings, at least 10 minutes apart, and wrote them down. I went up to 500°F in 25 degree increments. It took a while. But I found out why my results were random. So was my oven! At 300°F and 350°F, it was spot-on. But every other temperature was 15-50 degrees off. I took my data, and made a chart, listing Desired Temperature, and Set to Get temps. So now, I just consult my chart (taped inside a cabinet near the oven), and food comes out much better! All thanks to this thermometer. I also loaned this to a friend, as she had problems too. And I tested my toaster oven. Fine unit. Great hook for hanging it on a rack.

Bought this so I could more accurately gauge the oven temperature, as trying to divine this via oven knob & temp lines found on most ovens, is not ideal. Less of an issue if you have an oven with digital temp settings (my pipedream !). It's surprising just how 'off' most ovens are if you rely on the knob & temp line approach; I've found in most cases about 20 degree's off, which can really affect a cake/dessert bake. So I've found this gauge very helpful ... my bakes agree !
