Surprisingly accurate
We already have a digital hardness tester but weโre interested in seeing how accurate an analogue one would be. The main use we have for these is tied to scientific research, we work in the refrigeration industry and one of the things we do is look at how the different fruit storage technologyโs prolong a frites life span, so these types of equipment support our research immensely. The hardness tester itโs very simple to use and produces reliable accurate results (with a small margin of error but acceptable and within tolerance). The items all come in a handy sized storage box which is easy to pop in the lab cupboard. Great product and very useful.

Interesting instrument works very well
Whether your a professional or someone who just wants to test fruit firmness to evaluate when it's perfectly mature to consume or when it would be the perfect time to harvest this little instrument is great. It's very accurate and does exactly what is says, instructions are easy to follow and read, very pleased with it overall.

Newtry GY-3 Model - Very well protected, high quality, 2 attachments - soft/hard fruit
This arrived in very good outer packaging and extremely high protection within the outer cardboard. The plastic case has foam inside which holds the instrument and the two attachments in place. The instruments looks of very high quality, the two attachments have screw fixings. You are able to test the ripeness of soft fruit with one attachment and hard fruits like apples, pears etc with the other attachments. You simply need to cut away the skin on your hard fruit and insert the tester and it will tell you whether the fruit is mature enough to harvest. I will be using this at harvest time to ensure my apples are adequate to harvest for cider making. Good quality, would recommend.

Seems to do the job
I used this device (Newtry GY3) to measure the firmness of the fruits that we consume within our household. To use this device we need the big plunger. Always make sure it's on zero then we take an apple we look at the intersection of red and green. Then with a fruit peeler, we take off a little slice then we take the penetrometer and insert it into the apple slice. we have to be careful to not penetrating it beyond the marker line or else the reading will not be correct. Just hold the penetrometer and hold it firmly and you will read the firmness of the apple. It is really easy to use but unfortunately I didnt have any other device to compare it with so that I could confirm the accuracy. I just had to rely on a apple which I felt was firm in my view and use that as the best rating and compare it with other apples to see if they are similar in firmness. It does work on softer fruits as well in similar way. Overall, it seems to do its job and is easy to use but at this high price, I would have expected a more polished user experience. Maybe it is not for home use but rather for professional use where the user wants to test the firmness before start harvesting or before selling their produce.

It works well
This penetrometer comes in a hard box which provides good protection. It is a spring-loaded gauge with a known area of penetration head, you press into skin-off fruits to give you a reading at the maximum resistance. There are two penetration heads included. The bigger one is for softer fruits like bananas whereas the smaller one is for harder fruit like pineapples. Measurement is done in kg/cm2. After each reading you can set the gauge back to zero manually using the dial in the middle of the clock. There is a locking mechanism at the two o'clock position, make sure that is released before testing. It is a straightforward easy to understand gauge. The built quality is not the top notch type that you would find in German engineering but it is decent enough to last awhile. There is a leaflet included supposedly the instructions of what to do, I am afraid the written english on that is pretty bad, may as well have some diagrams or a link to a youtube video as instructions. I also think this penetrometer is quite overpriced for what it is, but it serves the purposes in comparing fruit hardness, great for farmers in harvest season.
