Not 'very good' condition
Front cover had been folded, bottom of the spine was torn, top upper quarter of the book had been wet and was wrinkled and was discolored. Very disappointing.

A fav as a child. Even more-so now.
I’ve never forgotten this and wanted to buy it for my son. I obviously had to read it first and wow…no wonder this stayed with me. You read this story in the head of numerous characters…even the badger and this is just beautiful. I still cry.

Very enjoyable! Brought back memories!
I read this in elementary school when I was about 8. It's still a great book 50 yrs later. I never forgot it, it made such an impression. I tried to find it over the years and had no success because I was thinking the book was called the badger, for some reason, and searches were coming up blank until I put a description of the book into Google and got a hit. It's a great story, well written.

Truth can be Difficult
Allan Eckert writes with such truth that it can be startling. While I liked this book, I was reared in a time and place where hunting was a way of life and a means of life. I found it startling to see the kills and hear the men talk about the hunt as if the animals had no rights. It troubled me then as it does now. At the same time, when a fox pup was left motherless, or a bobcat cub, a fawn, etc. my father would bring them home to be raised up until they could fend for themselves. We had several such young, and after one experience of leaving one at a zoo, the family voted that they would be released in a protected area with a friend who would supplement their food sources, giving them the best chance at freedom and survival that we could manage. So I appreciated the dichotomy presented in this book. BUT.....my grandchildren found this book impossible to listen too. The truth was just too cruel, and while I tried to explain what life was like for the characters, it was not possible to allay their fears and disgust. Perhaps when they are older that will change. But I had to finish the book on my own.If you are not familiar with Eckert as a historian, you may not want to present this book to your kids despite its awards.

You must read this to your school aged children! .
Thanks so much, I had forgotten that I had it sent to my grandson's in NC, where I was going to visit and kept asking my hubby back in NH if it had come. It is such a great book, one I read to my children 25 years ago and was very pleased to see it still in print! I am leaving NC today and just found out that they received it here but forgot to tell me, so I will have to read it to my grandson when i return next month. Thanks for the great service, sorry i got mixed up & didn't reply in a timely manner.

Good nature story about life, relationships, and death.
Story about being different from others and relationships. Good choice for 7th grade reading level. Good for vocabulary building. Also, helped wth learning about nature. Learning about the course of life and dying.

A story of survival based on actual events
This book was listed as further reading on the back cover of a similar one that I had purchased in America some years ago but I had never been able to acquire a copy before now. It was well worth buying and in fact my copy was an original first edition. The history and narure descriptions did not detract from the story and I could not put the book down until I finished it.

Un livre émouvant.
Une histoire touchante et bien écrite.Le niveau d’anglais est relativement élevé car le vocabulaire n’est pas toujours usuel mais l'histoire se comprend bien.
