Excellent story- a life changet
A counselor friend of mine passed this book to me a couple of years ago. It quickly became one of my favorite little books. My well-worn paperback edition has become dog-eared through the years so I was happy to find it on Amazon. My friend gave the book to me because I am a pastor- and he felt it would both inspire me and help me remember what really matters in life. He was right in both cases. If you deal with people in a ministry or counseling environment, you need to read this book. Beware, it is not a quick read- the cultural concepts shared take some time to digest. Beware also that you will shed a tear or two. I don't know a thing about Margaret Craven but I do know she struck a cord with me (and many others) when she penned this story. Do yourself a favor and curl up with this book. It will be well worth your time, and who knows, it just might change your life.

Beautiful Story Telling
A powerful story of peace, love and understanding. I didn't rate it 5-Stars only because it took me about 20-25 pages before getting into it. For a short book such as this, I thought it important to note. However, once I started to become invested in it, it was magnificent.

Such a soft book
Softness is not weakness, softness is not inelegant, softness is more subtle, it is walking lightly. A beautiful book. One that you can always go back too, and remember forgotten things. A book that will walk with you throughout your life.

an engaging novel
The language and imagery express and evoke depth of feeling and insight. This is a persuasive portrait of native people in the midst of cultural change from the viewpoint of a vicar who comes to them from his very different world. The theme of the loss of the past and the fading of memories of that past among the native people is a major thread in the novel, though their "myths" do survive in the minds of some of the old ones, as the vicar discovers.

A Walk Through Memory
I read this as a young woman, caught between two cultures. I am old now and at peace with them. This book was my introduction as to how it might be done. When the owl calls my name I shall be unafraid. I will know that I have lived long enough to be ready to die. This is wonderful and beautiful, triumphant and tragic, and it is the way of all flesh. Read this. Do not be afraid. In it is life and rejoicing. Live fully and the end will not matter much to you, but it will sing of life to all those you leave behind, and ease their going after you, as they must. You will have peace and always be free, no matter how others live uneasy in the prison of fear. It is good to live. It will be no great thing to die.

Perhaps the most beautiful book I have ever read
I recommend this book to everyone. It is written very simply, almost as though it were autobiographical, with great observation of a people and of the land in which they live. I have already read it twice and intend to read it many more times.

Very similar to our belief system.
The quality of paper is below standard. The print is rather small

Great for learning about culture and words
A nice story. Easy to read, good for non-English language learners, because it is clear but has still a lot of great new words. Motivating story, set to the background of the disappearance of the life of Native Americans, without negative judgments. Remember that it was published in the 60s, when A paternalistic style of colonialism was still valid. The situation has of course now changed, a lot for the better and worse.
