BUYER BEWARE!!
Please note the following review is my original with a 1-star rating (for fun):So I order this receiver. It comes in. I hook everything up. I have much experience with this, so I know what I'm doing. I've had an RCA, Sony, HarmonKarden, Denon, and Onkyo receiver at some point. But this Marantz receiver is ridiculous. That's why I gave it 1 star - so you would come in and see why. I had to get your attention and warn you: This receiver is AWESOME! That's right! Even after having the other quality-named branded receivers of the same class, this Marantz is heads and shoulders above any of them.My girlfriend could even tell the picture quality was better after having an hdmi running thru the Onkyo previously. We could both hear new sounds & music we hadn't ever noticed before in the soundtrack of a movie we've watched several times together. The sound processor/ decoder must be top quality; not to mention every speaker is individually amped. No sharing watts! It has a very strong stage presence in the room.A huge perk for me is the USB port on the front. I put my mp3's on it and plugged it in, and it plays them in a built-in media player in the receiver. They sound very clear and full. Only drawback is no matter how you organize them on the PC the receiver puts them in numeral/ alpha order. BUT it makes up for it by letting you use folders for different genres. It recognizes folders from the PC. Open one and play just the songs in that folder. It has all the basic options like random, repeat, and select another video source while you listen. One small warning: It has the ability to upconvert HD video to Ultra HD, however, my TV didn't recognize the signal. Keep that in mind if you don't have an Ultra HD 4k TV. But it does make DVDs look clearer, and colors brighter and natural. Blurays, of course, look and sound amazing. The sound gets in your bones! I highly recommend this receiver. Also, it runs cool. My Onkyo got very hot, which is why I decided to upgrade.(Note: The Marantz is paired with Klipsch Reference series speakers. They go really well together.)Thanks for reading.

Not so happy with the NR1604
The Marantz NR1604 receiver was excellent the first couple of years, It had incredible surround sound!! On screen display very user friendly, easy setup and then the screen started to get snowy and make an electrical shorting sound. Calibration of the surround sound speakers worked as expected . I would not buy another Marantz component Because of the price and longevity that I got out of it.The only thing Marantz made a mistake with was not adding WI-FI, it has an ethernet port for connecting to the internet.

First one bad out of box. Second one I like.
The first one ordered was bad out of box, no power. The Amazon return/refund process was a hassle but in the end Amazon returned all my out of pocket expenses. Must add the Amazon rep I had was world class and her follow up a WOW experience. The second NR1604 receiver orderded is good. I like the smaller profile, current features and does not run real hot during normal use. New Marentz NR1604 replaced my old Sony DA2000ES

Great sound and features, but it broke already
I have had the receiver for over 3 months. Shortly after the return window, audio began dropping out while watching tv and using Apple TV. Cable is connected through component and apple through hdmi. The receiver must be turned off then on to get audio back. called marantz service and quickly got someone on the phone. They recommended resetting it. I did that and reprogrammed everything. Worked for a while then started dropping out constantly. Did a reset again and now the audyssey won't recalibrate at setup. So, now it is at a marantz service center. At the price paid I am unhappy with the problems. When it worked, the reciver was awesome....setup was a piece of cake, sound was excellent, powered the extra zone on our patio. I loved playing my music straight from the iPhone.....plus it looks great. I'll update when the repairs are complete. So, check back....I am using my old HK in the meantime.

Stop looking and buy this receiver!
I have been nothing but impressed with this receiver. Don't let it's small form factor fool you, it is packed full of goodness! I went from an Onkyo TX-SR805, which I like very much by the way, to this due to space constraints I have in my new setup. The Onkyo was way to big, especially height wise, and it weighs a ton. This fit the bill. I had trouble deciding between this model and the NR1504 but decided to spend the extra for the 7.1 and 4k pass through/upscale.I was worried when I got this receiver because of the reduced power of the onboard amp. I was going from 130 watts/ch with the Onkyo to 50 watts/ch with this. My worries were unfounded as this receiver's amp puts out clean power providing crisp audio which no shortage on volume. I've got it hooked up to two Polk Rti12, two Fxi5. and an Csi5. These Polk speakers are efficient, but can handle way more power than this amp is rated to put out but it is unnecessary as they just sound fantastic with the NR-1604! I have since bi amped the Rti12 speakers, but I can't say I notice a difference--just thought I would try it since I am not using back surround speakers.I am still exploring all of its functionality but I am just very satisfied and so glad I chose to buy the Marantz. It's on screen menus are easy to follow. It has all the inputs I need and leaves off so much I never used with my previous receiver. It has preouts for another zone, a sub, and for front speakers which is really all most need. Front left and right speakers are the only speakers in a setup likely to be big and be able to do more with a quality powerful dedicated amp. But as I found out, give the 50watts/channel a try, I think you'll be quite impressed. It has many features that I have not discussed obviously, but you can research and easily explore them. Trust me, you will not regret this purchase. Go Marantz!

Nicely done.
Marantz has a winner with this unit. I have it running in 5.1 mode and the spare outputs feed speakers in another room. I often will listen to internet radio on the secondary speakers while the kids are watching a movie. Surround quality is quite nice. The automated setup did not work too well with my room. I manually tweaked the speaker distances and volumes to get the right sound.

Very pleased with this purchase...
I replaced a Harmon Kardon a/v amplifier with the Marantz. Prior to the HK I owned NAD. I am very pleased with the sound quality, usability and overall quality of the Marantz. Don't let the small size fool you, this is a very good amplifier. The HK amp was "high current" and certainly drove speakers quite easily. The NAD was also one of their 320 series which had very high power output. I can say with certainty that the Marantz is equally as powerful. I am using Pioneer speakers and really enjoy the quality of the sound. The combination has a really great midrange including superb response for rock (guitars and drums) and piano. The sound stage and overall distinction of instruments is great. For dvd and bluray the sound is really good. The set-up for the system is very fast with Audyssey and extremely accurate. The user interface allows quite a lot of versatility but is also easy to use.I highly recommend this amplifier.
