Hunt for a killer.
Deeper than the Dead was an enjoyable read. It was a mystery with many twists and turns, and an exciting ending. The plot and characters were well developed. All and all it was a fine novel.I only have one criticism. The characters were too unrealistic. Naturally enough, novels should create relationships and situations interesting enough to draw in the reader. However, if a novel is set in a realistic setting, it should contain MOSTLY realistic people and saturations. To be interesting, a novel must add out of the ordinary people and situations. But like adding spice to a dish, it can be over done. And I am afraid that is the case with Deeper than the Dead.Looking at the central characters, one of the four children is insane, one of the four Police Officers is insane, all three of the male suspects cheat on their wives, and of the three wives one is abused and one insane. This is not a world anyone would recognize. It crosses the line betweenthe unusual and the absurd.Again. Deeper than the Dead is well written. But it could, and should have been better.

Gruesome Serial Killer Mystery In Which Everyone Seems to Be a Suspect
In the small town of Oak Knoll, California - a fictional place a few hours north of L.A. - murders are rare and serial killers are unknown. Until 2 bodies turn up with identical markings, and another woman is missing. 5th graders at the local elementary school stumble across a half-buried female body near their school, and this gruesome scene sets off a series of investigations which seem to keep everyone that is questioned by the police and FBI expert on the list of potential suspects.Every family in this novel seems to have dark secrets of mental illness, domestic abuse, infidelity or some other abnormal condition, which reveals the fact that no one knows what goes on behind closed doors except the people inside. I found the fact that there were so many troubled people and families in this novel somewhat depressing. It would have been nice to find a few normal people with happy homes... As the author wrote: “Every family has its secrets, and those secrets can run deep—deeper than lies, deeper than death. And they impact every member of that family in ways we can’t know.”Nevertheless, the action moves at a fast pace, and the mystery of the serial killer's identity is evolving right up until the last few chapters, making this a page turner.

Great start to a mini series
Many years ago I read Night Sins and Guilty as Sin and enjoyed them. Every now and then I randomly buy one of Tami Hoag's books when I find one on sale at Barnes & Nobles, Hamilton Books (my favorite bookseller), or some other place.Recently started reading 'Secrets to the Grave' and quickly realized it was the second book in a mini series. Put it aside to look for and buy the first book and discovered there is a third one. I love it when this happens. So I bought both and started 'Deepen than the Dead'.This was a great book, a compelling read. I really thought it was so good. A wonderful cast of characters. Only one I didn't care for was the FBI guy, Vince Leone. Maybe with luck she will kill him off before the series ends.

Wonderful!
I love the way this author puts together sentences in such a picturesque way and have read many of her books, which were my all time favorites. This one is no exception and I loved that the characters were children with all of their quirks and intriguing behavior!

Great Entertainment!!! Highly suspenseful and great storytelling
Hoag brings terror to a small town where "things like this just don't happen around here." This is my first Hoag novel and I must say that I was highly entertained. Her characters are written very well and you get a since of what make each of them tick. The characters are complex but not to the point of not being believable. As they interact with one another you become suspicious of everyone and the story keeps you guessing right up until the end. This small town is being terrorized by a serial killer that is snatching woman, torturing and killing them. Set in 1985, law enforcement is losing the battle against a keen mind that is not making mistakes as he leaves his victims out for display. Since it is the mid 80's DNA evidence is not a technology that they may utilize so they must investigate everyone No man is not under suspension and no woman is safe until the murderer is stopped. As two bullies chase two other children after school one day, they go running down the hill and run into a scene of brutality that will shape and change each one of their lives forever. This is just the latest victim to be discovered and unfortunately for the police the killer leaves no clues on his identity. The story follows the lives of these four children and there families, Anne Navarre who is there teacher and the law enforcement agents looking for the perpetrator.Tami Hoag has written a great murder mystery that mixes suspense with a little romance sneaked in and is an excellent novel for any reader. I couldn't put this novel down and I highly recommend it to all.Grade: A+

The black demon

Would recommend
Tami Hoag is among one of my favourite authors, have read this book series before but had to have a copy so I could reread it whenever I get the urge, which will happen after I finish the book series I’m reading now.

Life in Oak Knoll just got dangerous
A quiet, subdued town has a serial killer on the loose, a small community with varied characters with each having a different secrets to hide. Leon and Mendez need to get their hands dirty and unravel all the secrets and lies to find our "See-no evil" killer. A great read..
