Good Enough For Ski Trips
Bought these to use during ski outings. Initial thoughts: 1. It is VERY difficult to get the battery back off. You have to push down hard on a particular spot on the back and then slide it to get it to release. If you don't have good hand strength, you WILL be very frustrated (I was for a good 10 minutes). 2. Instructions for using the walkies are decent, just make sure you read them all. 3. These are about standard size, so fit easily into ski jacket pockets made for cellphones, badge holders, etc. Thoughts after first use: These worked very well. Used them at Sunday River, and got pretty good distance out of them, even when out of line of sight. As expected, once someone was on the other side of the mountain or at a neighboring mountain's trails, we couldn't contact them (there are 5 mountains at Sunday River, it's huge!). But, it did help us keep track of the kids, and that was the important part. Being able to charge them overnight was great, especially since we didn't bring a bunch of batteries for the other walkies. They lasted all day (8 am - 4 pm) in 28-38° weather without any problems, but we also didn't hold full convos on them, just quick check-ins throughout the day with each other. Throughout the trip I put mine in my inner cellphone pocket, my arm pocket, and the outer chest pocket without any issues. Additionally, we used these with a couple Blackfin walkies and a Cobra mini walkie without any receiving/transmitting issues. Would definitely recommend these.

Surprisingly good walkiie talkie set
I almost didn't buy this Midland set, the reviews on all of them being so poor; I kept wondering how you could have so many 5-star ratings AND so many 1-star (or 0-star if some had their way) ratings on the same product. I took a chance and ordered these, and I'm glad I did. They powered up overnight in the base, and my wife and I have used them several times in test scenarios, we plan to use them on our next hiking trip where it's easy to become separated. Yesterday's test was on a visit to a downtown office building; while my wife waited in the car with one handset, I took the other one with me and checked in all along my trip across the parking lot and to the 5th floor of a steel and concrete building, oh, and up and down the elevator too. Not one dropped call, we heard each other perfectly and chatted back and forth through the entire test. I'm impressed. I have not tested the "24 mile range" claim, but have no illusions that I can actually do that, unless weather and broadcasting conditions are perfect; but in the distance tests we DID try (about a mile, from one side of our subdivision to the other) and the urban downtown building test, they performed quite admirably. I'm beginning to think that the many negative reviews come, in part, from a few dissatisfied customers, a few people who just can't read and follow directions, and a few from competitor brands who have nothing else to do but run down the Midland products. I am VERY happy with this Midland model, and it's a good deal.

NOT a 24 mile range, not even close, you should still buy it though.
These worked pretty well. Used them on my vacation in Aruba. We didn't have cell phones because verizon would charge roaming fees. These were a great way to communicate with each other. Overall they worked well and I would recommend them, but here are my only issues with them. 1. The range is not 24 miles, I kinda expected this though... but it's not even 12 miles. In fact, I think the furthest we went was about 3-4 miles before it started to cut out. This was in the flat Aruba deserts too, so there was little to no interference. I think the 3-4 mile range isn't bad, and honestly it's what I expected, but it kinda just pisses me off that they wrote 24 miles. I could understand maybe 10-12 but 24? Really? 2. The battery didn't last as long as I would have liked. It would last around 12 hours. Which was fine, but it meant we had to remember to always charge them at night and even during the day there were a few occasions where they would die sooner (like 8 hours) if we were using them a lot. Definitely happy with the purchase and will keep them. But I think they need to update the description (and title!) to revise the "24 mile" claim. Also, make sure you seat the walkie fully into the charge station so the light turns on. It can be kinda tricky at first, but you need to press down firmly until the LED illuminates.

The earpiece fits nicely and comfortably over the ear with a small plug ...
I bought these (6 total radios) for my five man high school football officiating crew. I also bought the "surveillance" style earpieces with a push to talk button for each radio. We have used them five times so far and my entire crew loves them. We attach the radio to our belts on our backsides, connect the wire to the radio, and run the wire up through the shirt and over the shoulder to the front zipper. The push to talk (PTT) button, with its built in microphone, comes through the front zipper on the shirt and is attached to the collar. The earpiece fits nicely and comfortably over the ear with a small plug that inserts into the ear. Only a very short section of the wire is exposed outside of the shirt and does not get in the way. It is very easy to push the PTT button by just reaching up to my collar and squeezing the small unit with the PTT button on one side. I am the referee on the crew and often also have a separate stadium PA system microphone attached to my body. So far it has not been a problem - I have not confused the crew radio with the stadium microphone. That could be very potentially embarrassing if I did! I keep the crew radio on my left side and when I have a stadium microphone, I attach it to my right side. So it is very easy to keep them separated. The earpiece is small and is not intrusive to the ear. It stays in the ear and is not uncomfortable even after several hours. The battery life has not been a problem. I make sure the radios are fully charged before each game. We have used them on high power every time so far and have not seen a low battery indicator by the end of the game (there is no battery level indicator until the battery is low so there is no way to know how much battery power is left). Our longest game so far lasted 4:17 hours. The batteries did not indicate low by the end of the game. We had a two hour lightening delay and kept the radios on during the delay to monitor the weather and communicate with each other during the delay. The radios were very handy because three of the officials accompanied the teams back to the locker rooms at the school (about a 10 minute walk from the field) while two of us stayed at the field to monitor the lightening in the sky. We were able to radio each other during the delay so we could easily keep the teams informed as to how much longer the delay would last. In Ohio, there is an automatic 30 minute delay each time we either see lightening or hear thunder. The 30 minute clock was reset several times and the radios made it very easy to notify my fellow officials at the school each time we restarted the 30 minute clock. Both teams appreciated this up to the second information. Near the end of the delay, when I hadn't seen lightening for 20 minutes, we were able to have the teams start the walk back over to the field so that they would be able to walk onto the field as the final 30 minute delay expired. In that way, the radios helped us to keep the game on time as much as possible. I did have some difficulty hearing my fellow officials this past Friday night at a game. It was the largest crowd we have had so far this season and the noise was in the stadium was loud. We managed even with this problem but there were times when I had no idea what was being said. Occasionally we also have two officials talking at the same time. When that happens, you cannot hear either one - it just sounds garbled. I don't know how to fix that problem other than to ask one of them to repeat what they just said. These radios do not have privacy codes. That was one of my concerns before purchasing them. I was afraid that someone else in the area or in the stadium might start interfering with our communications. So far that has not happened. But it is a risk. I also have to warn the crew each week to be careful what they say because the radios are public - anyone with the proper equipment within broadcast range can hear what we say. There are better radio systems for football officials available on the market. Even wireless systems. But they are more expensive. I spent a total of $160 for 6 of these radios plus 6 of the surveillance style earpieces. Considering that high school football officials don't get paid much money, I thought that was a reasonable expense to incur in order to make our jobs much easier. So far, I think it was money well spent. The biggest problem I have had so far is keeping one certain member of my crew from dominating use of the radios! He won't shut up. But that isn't a problem with the radios. LOL.

Midland LXT500VP3 Review
These are good two way radios in a couple of aspects. 1st, they hold a charge very well. I bought them for work and we use them constantly throughout 10 hour days and they have never gone dead. Not once. 2nd, they are crystal clear in reception, with a caveat... 24 miles is NOT possible for these radios unless you and the other person are on top of two mountains. Otherwise for short distance transmission they are great. 3rd, they have a lot of cool little features that you can either use or disable ie.. the roger beep. Now for what I don't like. 1st, as I said range is an issue, if you are inside a building of any kind you may get about 1/8th of a mile. Maybe a mile if you go outside, but certainly not 24 miles. 2nd, the volume's highest setting of 8 is not very loud unless you are in a quiet office. I drive around on loud forklifts and need to communicate with the office staff, so I bought the accessory earplug and collar ptt mic. It works well with this combo. I actually turn the volume down to 4 with the earplug because it's loud. I clip the mic to the collar of my shirt so I don't have to reach down and grab the entire radio. It's very convenient that I don't have to fumble around everytime someone calls me. 3rd, the clip on the back is not very strong, if the radio catches on something and gets hung up the clip will simply break. That happened to two of the four that I purchased. As a side note, I should mention that when the clips broke the radio dropped straight onto concrete and didn't even have a mark. I have personally dropped mine about 10 or 12 times and they still work. Good radio, would have given it 5 stars aside from the 3 things mentioned above.

Every component failed within 18 months
We initially bought a single pair of these so we could keep in touch with our kids while they were playing in the neighborhood. We ended up buying a 2nd pair so each child could have one, we had one, then there was a spare. Within one month of use, the mechanisms that click the radios into place to charge failed, both sides. I switched the bases (really only used one). Within A SINGLE WEEK, they failed again. So I contacted Midland, their customer service was excellent. They asked for our address and sent us 2 kits that included bases, AC adapters, and car chargers. Thinking the kids were just cramming the radios in the chargers, I told them not to charge them anymore and that I would do it. Sure enough, less than a week, both mechanisms were shot with me setting them in place. Poor product design at this point. OK, no reason to contact customer support again, we'll just be in a loop of them sending garbage bases. So we continue on, now having to fiddle with the radios each time we go to charge them, making sure the red light is on. Fast forward a year or so, I grab a radio off the charger, red light on, been charging all night. Powered it up, about 15 minutes later, it was beeping low battery. Hmmm, weird, maybe it didn't make good contact on the broken base. Ok, switch for a different one. A few weeks later, the same thing. Ok, set that one aside and used the other ones. As of right now, 3 out of the 4 radios last 5-60 minutes on a full, overnight, sometimes multiple day charge. I would strongly advise anyone from purchasing this model. I've been looking for replacements for about an hour now and settled on another brand. Midland's support is phenomenal. The product is pretty bad, though. Not sure if their higher end models fare any better. I'm surprised to see so many positive reviews. Maybe these reviewers haven't had them as long as I have.
