Boot up time is instant. I like the size & ease of use here. I think it more useful than a cell phone for the purposes I have. As others have mentioned, there isn't a USB connection for computer syncing. My attempts to transfer data via a cable & Microsoft mike transfer is less than satisfactory, mainly because the volume reproduction from the computer file is quire low, for whatever reason I know not. On the other hand, Sony's description says it can be used to record lectures, which would imply considerable distance. **Q: Is there a strereo input jack on this unit?** A: on the top are 2 holes 1 ia for earphones and i assume the other is for stereo jack input. best i can tell you **Q: While going back through the tape, can you back up and replay portions of the recording (and not have to go back to the beginning)?** A: Yes, you can. I use my recorder to assist with taking minutes of our HOA meetings and I'm constantly going back to sections to make sure I heard it correctly. While doing a playback, all you do is press the left arrow for a rewind. When you release the rewind button, the recording will automatically play from that point. Don't press stop and then press rewind. It picks up my professor just the same if he walks to the far end of the room. The files are easily saved.
