Saves time and money—and it’s healthy!
My dogs absolutely LOVE this food. Ive been making them food and supplementing with vitamins, probiotics, etc. It all adds up. Plus, I’m worried they aren’t getting enough nutrition. So this takes the guesswork out of the process—and even though it’s expensive—the money (and time!) I’m going to save on all the other elements plus the time of cooking it all. The process is super easy. When you add the hot water and start stuffing, it smells like cup of soup. All the ingredients are easy to spot, and the consistency is great. It doesn’t look like it’s much going in the bowl, but I believe it’s giving them all they need to keep them healthy and happy. I will definitely continue buying this product!

Determined to give the best quality of life (kidney & liver disease)
TLDR: Dog has liver & kidney disease. I am using this, a renal diet, immunity boosting mushrooms, milk thistle and goats milk w/probiotics. Day 1 he loved it, will update. I intend to follow up with this review as time goes on. He has a follow up vet appointment in a few weeks where I will request another blood sample to be taken and I will share the results. Background: I have a 14 year old Shih Tzu named Diesel. 14 pounds. He has been my rock and support system for all these years, best believe in his golden years I'm going to give him the best quality of life and love I can afford. He had been picky about eating, chewing/gnawing on treats, had an occasional cough/hack and random bouts of vomiting. The vet diagnosed him with a small heart murmur and his lab work showed signs of stage 2 kidney failure and liver disease. The vet recommended I change his food and provide him supplements. Science diet/KD didn't feel like a good choice to me. I did some research on his lab work (included photo) and scoured all available resources to better understand his complications. I'm NOT a vet and neither is the internet, but after hours of reading research papers and random commercial websites to understand what was going on I found Dogaware.com a thorough and easy to read resource on both kidney and liver disease. I highly recommend you give it a reading if your fur babe has the same issues. Basically, "the goal is to reduce phosphorus by feeding moderate to high fat, moderate amounts of high quality protein, and low phosphorus carbohydrates to provide calories...fed several small meals throughout the day rather than just one or two large meals." I looked at all the top rated at-home treatments for his condition and found that certain mushrooms were the main ingredient and milk thistle. I then searched for what foods are recommended for a liver and kidney cleansing/healing diet. I found this dog food and was impressed with great reviews on both Chewy and Amazon. Many of the reviews spoke of it improving their dogs kidney and liver disease issues, let's give it a shot! I have paired it with goats milk containing pre&probiotics, an organic mushroom blend (ideally for the turkey tail and cordyceps), milk thistle and bene-bac plus probiotic (for an occasional boost). This food is meant as a base, meaning YOU HAVE TO ADD PROTEIN!! So on the side I have prepared ground chicken in coconut oil paired with recommended vegetables (i.e. sweet potato, carrots, peas, green beans, kale, pumpkin, asparagus). *note* if you can get green Tripe it's supposed to be really good for them). BASICALLY MY PRINCE IS EATING BETTER THAN ME LOL 1st review 6/26/2020: Opening the food I was very impressed, it just looks "healthy." I also like that it has ground egg shell included for calcium and it balances out phosphorus. I added one scoop with hot water and let it soak. After a few minutes I mixed in the ground chicken-veggie mix I had prepared, a tiny bit of mushroom powder, his first 1/2 dose of bene-bac plus and the goats milk. (The milk thistle will be delivered in two days). Honestly, I wasn't prepared for his reaction. He's usually a bit picky and will stare me down if he doesn't like it. He chowed it down with no hesitation!!! Only time will tell if this will be a component to his recovery, but I look forward to utilizing this as the foundation to his success. Please note: I know there's a kidney supplement Dr. Harvey offers, but it had limited reviews and my intuition felt it would be best to stick with the mushrooms and milk thistle which I know are key components to many of the elixirs offered. July 24th update: TLDR: Dog is happy, energetic and fur looks great. I haven't had a chance to go back to my vet yet for lab work, hopefully soon. However, He must have been feeling sick before because within a week of his new diet he was more energetic, playful and would actually go on walks whereas before I practically had to drag him out. Also, his breath smells WAY better, his fur is looking thicker and shinier, he has an appetite now and has gained a 1.5 lbs or so. I have been meal prepping for the week. I prepare and store the meat cooked in coconut or salmon oil and Dr Harvey's mixed with the mushroom powder separately. When serving meals I add the meat to a bowl, reheat it in the microwave, take it out and add the pre-prepared dr Harvey's. I Then top it with the Epakitin, milk thistle, goats milk with probiotics and occasionally benebac plus for a boost. **NOTE: I have since included Epakitin a recommended chitosan-based phosphate binder to sprinkle on his food. If you read the articles you'll know why its important. Will update again soon xoxo

Hydration! Lowers bun and creatinine- my dog loves it!!!
My 10yr lab/bloodhound mix ho is 65 lbs was diagnosed early May 2025 with first stage or start of kidney failure- it was horrible news. The vet sent us out with 8lbs of hills Kd food for 60.00. She wouldn’t eat it. I tried adding the canned kid food to the kibble..still meh on food and the cans are 7.00 each, so I started researching- I found this base. I added about 5-6 oz of slow cooked chicken beast in water and shedded it out. Added organic steamed baby carrots…and mushroom powder along with omega 3 fish oil to her food. The big thing with kidney failure is HYDRATION…and here’s how I tweak her diet after her 1 month check up we just had. The vet thought I was definitely doing wrong by dog feeding her a “homage diet” he really put that down UNTIL her bloodwork came back 30 mins later. Her Bun was back to normal. Her protein was down 3 points and she’d lost 2lbs. So the vet was thrilled and told me to keep doing what I’m doing but reduce her to 1.5 oz of chicken per meal, add rice for carbs to keep her weight up and add beans to her food. So I’m now slow cooking her beans (more hydration) rice (more hydration) and I just hit Phos-bind In. That will attach to the proteins in blood and force it it when uses the bathroom. This reduces the phosphorus in her blood created from animal proteins- she can have all the vegetable proteins she wants. And now I’m cutting her omega 3 oil in 1/2 and using evoo or flaxseed oil to her food daily. This base mix is 50% hydration - my dog in 2 weeks from starting this diet is drinking normally again. Had not incontinence issues anymore and boy is she back to 100% of her energetic self. She loves the food, loves the rice, carrots and beans. I cook it all myself because you don’t want the sodium of pre made. We go back in 3 months and see what her bloodwork says. But this food and the trouble of cooking all her food and bathing each item separately is really worth it. I do see the improvement in her before adding the beans and carbs last night. I can’t wait to try the phosphorus binder. I just want her happy and pain free as long as I am blessed to have her. BadThe 10 lbs bag last about 6 weeks for me with a large dog. The cost of everything is about 1/2 or more than if I was buying hills kibble and canned food. Nope not healthy for them. Kibble is the devil for real. It hurts their bodies. It over cooked and not moist. I need to find her some kind of hard thing to scraper teeth to eat. Bones are no due to animal products…but she’s so much happier. No more waking me up to go out 3 times a night. Or wetting the bed (happened 2 times/ first time I took her in that week to the vet- she’s never wet the bed In Life) I hope this review helps. I wax overwhelmed and spent 1.5 weeks researching hours a day on how to best approach kidney failure/ disease in dogs. I’m glad I tried this food. It’s a life saver. I wish I’d feed her this since I got her at 7 weeks old. I doubt we’d be seeing kidney issues now if I’d known better.

How I prepare my dog's meals
Even though there are excellent kibbles, such as VēRUS, that offer well balanced quality ingredients that meet all the nutritional needs of a dog, it's still kibble. Some serious pet owners make each of their pet's meals entirely from scratch, but I just don't have the time. Dr. Harvey's is a great in-between. Their dehydrated base mix provides all the nutrients necessary for a dog to thrive and all I need to do is add the protein. For ground beef, I cut squares in the correct quantity (my dog requires 1.5 oz of protein), by weighing the first one to exactly 1.5 oz. so I get a sense of the size and estimate the rest of the cuts (see photo). I place the squares on sheets of parchment paper and lay them on a baking sheet in the freezer for an hour until they're quite set, then place the cut sheets back the freezer in a container. When I need them for a meal I pull out one square and allow them to thaw in the refrigerator the day before or place one square in the microwave for 1 minute at 40% power. That thaws it completely without cooking it. Then I squish it into a pan and fry it. I suppose you can cook it in the microwave, too. You can do this for ground chicken and pork too. The meat pictured is actually from a farmer at my local outdoor market who grinds a blend of his grass fed beef, chicken, and ground up eggshells. I also cut up cooked chicken breast, one scrambled egg with cheese, and about any other protein I know he likes. I've been doing this for about a month and it's now quite easy and I fee good about giving him the best quality food for his health. Unlike other foods I've fed him, he never fails to eat and enjoy these meals!

Game Changer! Outstanding food for kidneys and general health!!
In mid 2021, my 80 lb retriever/chow mix dog was diagnosed with early stage chronic kidney disease. His Creatinine and BUN levels were elevated on the normal/high border. He also had other markers indicating the disease. I switched to Dr. Harvey’s and immediately noticed a difference in my dog’s energy level and it was evident he was feeling much better. This was significant! Note, I also add Cordyceps, Astragalus and Rehmannia root extract to his food to support his kidneys, as well as bone broth I make in the crockpot and freeze into cubes to add to the food. He has also had 3 knee surgeries on both rear knees, and has arthritis. His mobility also has improved greatly. He’s now 13 and will be 14 in a month and was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma two months ago. The only symptoms were his lack of appetite and lethargy. I assumed at the time it was due to his kidney disease progressing, however, his kidney levels were/are perfect! It was his liver levels that were elevated due to the cancer. The Oncologist informed me his muscle mass was great and other than the elevated liver levels, everything else looked very good. She assured me he was a good candidate for treatment, and looked better than most dogs his age. I started him on chemo and he went into full remission within two weeks. When his appetite returned within a few days of treatment, I continued giving him the Dr. Harvey’s. I now can’t keep up with him on walks, and he’s back to chasing rabbits, deer and the local cat. I attribute this to the cancer treatment, daily exercise and his diet. I can’t say enough good things about this food and the extended life it has brought my dog. If I hadn’t switched to Dr. Harvey’s, I’m certain my dog would no longer be with me. The cost is a bit more due to the meat and fish I buy to add to the food, but not terribly expensive and not much more than the prescription kibble the vet recommended (which I feed as a treat on occasion. This allows me to feed him kibble on trips, or if I have to leave him with the pet sitter). It is nothing compared to the vet bills that would have occurred otherwise and my dog feels and looks great! I do recommend swapping out the meat source weekly, though, as my dog has acquired a chicken allergy. I was using nothing but chicken for the first year, and feel this most likely contributed to his allergy. Also...It did take him a bit to warm up to the food at first, so don't give up quickly if your dog turns its nose up. Persistence is everything, and once he figured out that it's better food and tastes better, he devoured it (and still does). This took several attempts and not caving with other food.

High quality but high$$
I tried to provide photos “play by play” as though you were with me. This is, no doubt, extremely expensive. You can, and I did, do this for far less $$. I purchased the 6 lb bag, somehow Amazon didn’t cancel the 10lb bag I cancelled (thinking if they don’t like/allergic start small). And my intention was to have it for emergencies. If I ran out of my veggies or was sick etc I could pull out Dr. Harvey’s to the rescue. As you can see (zig pics are posted) we have GSD’s an adult male and two puppies that eat like horses )LOL)! I go thru 4 lbs Bison daily, make quinoa and veggies every other day, With the puppies energy level they need a carb (grain) but it has to be low glycemic. Rice, even brown and oatmeal turn into sugars. They are poor quality grains to feed dogs (or humans). I’m assuming the reader knows corn, wheat, soy and potatoes are common allergens. Several veggies in Dr. Harvey’s and most of the “Raw Bases” and various Raw veggie supplements breakdown into sugars and create gas, but they are in small enough quantities mixed with other veggies that I wasn’t too concerned but that is the purpose of a trial. GSD’s are prone to bloat therefore glycemic and gassy foods should be avoided. Shiloh, our adult male has chronic GI problems and stays in his lane with food, bison and green beans, couple of oils and Azestfor (makes the food complete nutritionally /vitamins). But when I opened the bag of Dr H Shiloh came running into the kitchen and sat right next to me looking up, like hmmm, what is that yummy smell, so cute! He was right, it smelled EXACTLY like Knorr’s veg soup mix in the individual packets. About rehydrating. I feed three dogs. So I heated a cup of hot water. The instructions are to add equal amounts water for Dr. H. 1 scoop Dr. H gets 1 scoop water. I found I needed a little more, my bag had a lot of fine greens that soaked the water up leaving the larger veggies dry. **I suggest you heat up mote water than you need. Pic #1-2 are my cuties. #3-4 I tried to show you what Dr. H looks like rehydrating. Two ingredients are stellar the goat milk and green lipped muscles, as long as your dog has no allergies. I fed the puppies goat milk and Shiloh goat kefir. Goat dairy is extremely nutritious, far more than cow, and far more digestible. Shiloh stopped belching after meals and everyone loved it, but Shiloh was allergic. Pics #5-6 add the bison and quinoa. #7 is Shasta’s bowl with the puppies calcium supplement and Azestfor. If you home cook you must add a complete supplement. One that provides the minimal vitamins and minerals required by Pellet diets (kibble). I add Seaweed Calcium (puppies) and a greens supplement on top. Last pic mixed and the video is Shasta chowing down, why do they hate the IPhone so much?? Dr. H a little goes a long way. I would feed more than what the instructions say. Shiloh is 117 lbs it recommends 4 scoops, I would give him 2 each meal. They eat 3 times/day. I use EVOO or Avacado oil. I found coconut oil, hemp and flax seed oil to be hard on their tummies, but every dog is different. Hope this helps. If you are using a cheaper protein like chicken and or you have smaller this may be affordable. I feel confident that it would be healthy!

Finally a dog food that I can gear to the needs of each of my dogs!
This post is about my positive experience with a new dog food that I tried called Dr. Harvey’s Miracle Dog Food Pre- mix Health Food. My husband and I adopted another rescue greyhound in late January and he was nothing but skin and bones. He broke his ankle on the track and was retired. You may not know this but racing dogs are fed raw meat. Of course when he went to the rescue group he was switched to a dry kibble food which I could tell was not agreeing with him due to his terrible gas, upset stomach at least 3 times a week and loose stools. I know, TMI! So I wanted to put him on a high quality, high protein, good fat, and low carb diet which is very expensive as carbs and meat by-products (road kill, and all other parts of slaughtered animal other than meat, skin, or organs, such as beaks, feet). Gross right? I tried at least 5 different very expensive dry kibble with no luck. He didn’t gain weight , he continued to have upset stomachs, and horrible gas! He is 3 years old. In the meantime, my 11 year greyhound was recommended to be put on a prescription diet for kidney care where she needs no more than 14% protein, high Omèga-3 and low phosphorus. Well, I put her on that but of course she wouldn’t eat it. And did I mention that I always put either wet dog food or toppers to entice both of them to eat their food. However what ended up happening was that my senior dog wanted the young one’s food and vice versa defeating the purpose of trying to get them in the best health possible. I then heard from a vet online on how to slow cook protein such as beef, chicken, turkey, pork , or eggs with green beans, sweet potatoes, rice, peas with some fish added about twice a week, for their daily meal. This worked for about 2 weeks but it was very time consuming trying to feed two 75 pound dogs. I would have 2 crockpots going at once. The vet said if you slow cooked the food for 20-24 hours, then they could eat the chicken bones because they would just crumble apart but of course, I didn’t trust that and I would find some leg bones and thigh bones which were still hard and splintery so I would have to mush through every thing which was very time consuming. But the worst part was that my young one continued to have upset stomachs and horrible gas and I wasn’t sure if this was best for my senior dog’s kidney issues. So back online I went and found a vet nutritionist who has been selling a dehydrated, human grade dog food for over 20 years that you add hot water to rehydrate and add the amount of protein and oil your dog needs. In the pictures below you can see a list of the ingredients. This way I am able to control the amount of protein that my senior dog needs daily, 8-10 oz, and a good omega-3. I was using canned sardines but at 1.99 a can, which would be a little under half the amount of protein she needs, that was getting a little expensive. My young greyhound gets 20-22 oz of protein a day along with some olive oil. I accomplish this by baking 4-5 chicken leg quarters per day which yields me about 2 lbs of protein per day. I recently switched to marine phytoplankton which is plant based pure omega-3 which is grown or farmed in ocean water so it’s a sustainable supply. You only need a fourth of a teaspoon per day per dog (powder form) mixed in their food. This dog food has truly been a miracle food source for them. They both attack their food like they haven’t eaten for days. They eat twice a day. My young greyhound has not had a stomachache since starting this food, no gas, no licking of his fur or paws and he seems to feel so good. My senior dog is getting the right nutritional balance for kidney issues and absolutely loves her food. She still plays with her squeaky toys every night after eating. They also do zoomies in the back yard every day to get their 3 minute exercise routine done. If you have dogs with particular nutritional needs or you just want your fur baby to eat a great quality food, I highly recommend this food, and no, I am not being paid for this review. It’s been a 6 month struggle to find a good dog food that works for both of them. Arlo and Kibbles give it 5 stars!

Worth every penny!
This is a great product. The base mix of Dr. Harvey's dog food line is as close to homemade as you can get but with the assurance that all your dog's nutritional needs are being met. The best part is that my dog loves it. Before I found Dr. Harvey's, my dog just wouldn't eat for days. I tried every kind of food in the retail market at pet stores I tried top grade kibble, top grade fresh, and my dog refused it all. Finally, I received Dr. Harvey's base mix and my dog is ready to eat when I put his bowl down. He is now in the best of health. His coat is healthy looking ad shiny. My dog has more energy. I can vary the proteins added to the food too.

Love this, please continue to stock this food !!!!
I have been using this food for the past two months on my 2 dogs. One of them has early stage 1 kidney disease, as she is losing protein in her urine. She is on medication, Benezapril, and I am going to wait another month or so and then do another urine test specifically for her protein ration (UPC urine test) and see where we are at. My other dog has no kidney issues, but she is on the same food. They both love it, and I like how easy this food is to prepare. I add specific amounts of cooked protein (chicken thigh or hamburger) and then add the Dr. Harvey's fish oil. I hope Amazon continues to supply this food, as I live in Canada and ordering directly through Dr. Harvey's will probably cost more as it has to be shipped to Canada, and then I've been told that there will probably be a "customs duty charge" added onto my order. I get worried as every time I order this through Amazon (twice now) as it indicates the item is "in stock", but then it takes several days until the item is shipped and then I get notice as to when the expected delivery date will be. As another customer mentioned, PLEASE DON'T STOP offering this food as we have little doggies that love it, and most of all need and depend on it :)
