Let me start out by saying that my knowledge of CB's is extremely limited and Everything I've learned, is from reading as much as I can in these last 3 months. I went with the Cobra 29 LX because I liked the newer modern faceplate and the 29 seems to be a popular choice. Along with the radio, I purchased a Wilson T2000 Antenna which is 4.5ft tall. I also bought a Astatic 636L mic to replace the factory one with. I made a custom bracket out of some scrap iron and mounted it on the rear of my F250 inside the bed, and for the radio, I made a custom mount by bending some metal into L-brackets and mounting them under the center console (see pictures to see what I mean. Lastly, I mounted an external speaker above my head and ran a long 3.5mm audio cable through the head liner, down the A-pillar and under the carpet to the radio Before I even ran all the power wires for the radio. Before I ran all the power and ground wires for the radio, I had a CB shop peak and tune the radio. After it was all said and done, the radio dead keyed right under 6 watts of power and peaked right under 30 watts. From what I've read this seems to be the average for a basic peak and tune. I got the SWR nice and low 1.1-1.2 across all channels. So how does it perform? It performs amazing I think. So far everyone has told me how loud and clear it sounds to them. I usually talk on Ch 19 but as you know, Ch19 seems to be really dead these days where hours would go by without hearing a word. Tonight, While I was fueling up my truck, I talked with a guy who was a local and told me that him and a lot of other locals guys talk on Ch 28 and ch36 every night. He came in loud and clear and said that I was also coming in loud as if I was just a few miles away from him and asked me my location. When I gave it to him he couldnt believe I was able to hit him back so clearly because we were about about 20 miles apart (straight shot, not driving distance) I ended up talking with him and a few other guys who were all in the 15-20 mile range all running home base stations with towers and big power and they all complemented how well I sounded. I don't know much about CB's but I'm told that the Antenna is a big part of the performance you get. Either way, I'm very happy with this radio. At some point I'll likely add a linear amp to it but for now it works great and talks far. I do have one complaint wit the radio. Every time I set the clock and turn it on to show up, the next time I turn the truck back on after it's been turned off, the clock go away and resets its self. It's as if it isn't saving it in the memory. I remembers what my last channel I was on and every other feature that I've custom set...Everythin BUT the clock. It's not a huge deal to me since I have a clock about 1 foot above the radio anyway but just thought it was worth noting. Review: High marks from a Meteorologist and Storm Chaser and Jeep Wrangler Owner! - Absolutely love this CB! I am a storm chaser, so the need for weather radio and quick communications was a must, and who else to turn to for these needs than Cobra, one of the best in the business for a long time! There are cheaper radio options out there, but if you want quality products with great features that will last, this is the exact place to look! My favorite feature is the built in receiving capabilities for the weather radio, as being a full out weather nerd, as well as a degreed meteorologist, and a storm chaser, this is just flat out cool! You can scan all 7 NWS broadcast weather stations, as well as the 3 Public Alert Stations. You can actively scan the stations so that you will always jump to the closest (and most relevant) station, as well as you can set up weather alerts that the CB will lock to the closest station and if a watch or warning goes out, it will automatically flip the radio over to the weather channel so you are instantly aware of the warning! This is an incredibly useful and awesome feature for storm chasing and can be useful for many different operations! Also, you have instant channel 9/19 on the regular CB channels, you can scan all 40 channels to find ones with activity, and you have a lot of control as this is a high end system to get everything perfectly to your preferred settings! Plus, another awesome feature on this is the digital screen which can show so much, from a clock/timer/alarm to for timing driving time and an easy to view clock to weather alert status, just so much! As well as, you have the ability to change the color of the face of the radio from your choice of 4 colors that will match most interior lightning colors in vehicles, or whatever your preferred color to look at is! All around, this radio is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend this if you are in the market for one! For me, I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler. I mounted with the Rugged Ridge high center mount which is located between the sun visors above the rear view mirror, and it fits perfectly with the mic hanging on the side of the radio with the included mic mount! Tweaked! Peaked and tuned idk? You can have any radio tweaked, take your cb to a guy/cb shop(the guy making announcments over the radio...) He will snip out the thing that only allows it to do only 4 watts and add a thingymajob to bump it up to 20, 30, 40 watts. Or...hook up a linear. Or...do both. FYI- Half of your radio is your antenna, put the ugly sticks under your bunk and get a pair of wilsons or k-40s or anything else... **Q: What does it mean if the set does not turn on and you have a slight burning smell?** A: That means something is WRONG big time!!! Turn it off and have it checked out by a pro. Something is burning and u don't want a fire in ur truck or car. **Q: How many watts can this CB carry?** A: 4 Watts AM mode. Peaking is a joke used on people that don't know any better. I've seen too many con-jobs out there. You can (illegally) modify the transmitter but that would be a waste of your money. Linear amps require a power source that can supply the needed current and that may require building-up your car battery and alternator for the job. Linears are also illegal for that radio service. You will achieve your best (legal) results by using a good antenna system. **Q: What's the dynamite knob?** A: DYNAMIKE - This control amplifies your voice to make you sound louder. It is like a built-inpower mike. Normally you would have this control turned all the way up. I installed it in my truck in less than fifteen minutes , with my existing coax and antenna. Worked perfectly, without having to tune it. Sound quality is good even without an external speaker. On the interstate , I'm getting out approximatly 2.5 to 3 miles.
