will this pickup cat litter and cat hair?

Yes. I have 3 cats, and it does a good job with cat hair. Wait, why is it called fur when it's on the cat, but it's called "cat hair" when it's blowing around my house? Either way, this vacuum can handle it.

I think it's a great carpet vacuum. We have a housekeeper who vacuums our area rugs (wool cut pile Chinese, very tight weave) every two weeks, two directions, with an upright Oreck, and I have followed her with this and gotten quite a bit more pet hair. I'm just here ordering another one because something got in the blower fan of mine (don't know how as there's a foam filter - but something did), and locked it up so it won't rotate. I've gotten the vacuum apart (it's pretty easy - of course I'm a Mechanical Engineer with 51 years of design experience, so I tend to think like the people who design these things), but can't get the fan/motor assembly apart to free the jam - it looks like the fan front cover was glued on after the impeller was installed. So I'm buying a new one. I'm very impressed with the internal design, and the thinking and quality that went into this thing for 90 bucks. And they must be good, because they're still selling the same product six years after I bought my first one- even the same model number, which is very rare.
