University Physics Volume 1 by OpenStax

This book sucks. We're using this right now and i gotta say, that the layout is really bad. First off the typography makes it almost literally unreadable. They have what looks like paragraph breaks but actually part of sentences. The line spacing is really weird. Check out the pictures, it speaks for itself.A new section will begin right after another ends. So if a section ends three inches from the bottom of a page, the next section starts there. Saying this, its very counterintuitive when flipping through. See the pictures.The color system is ineffective and if anything, distracts from the information. Our instructor regularly clarifies the chapter exercises because they are terribly written. The images? I wouldnt even know where to start. Did the graphic designers go on strike when this book was made? Was the Illustrator aware that some of their uber detailed masterpieces would be reduced to 1.5 inches and their tame airline safety manual drawings be used much much larger than i think was intended? There are endless images that have been scanned low rez. Its beyond horrible. This hardly looks like a first attempt. It looks like someone missed a printer's deadline.If i didnt need this book for the class, i would absolutely return it.

Early on in the semester for my physics course, I would read the book and go to class - I ended up reading the first few chapters of this book., but it would always take a while to read the sections bc they were thorough and somewhat confusing. Later on in the semester, though, busyness caught up with me, and I stopped reading and started going off of my professor’s lecture notes instead. Fast forward to the last part of the semester when I needed extra help so I went back to the book and to the section that we were learning about. I couldn’t understand almost any of it, and it made me frustrated. I think that if you stop reading it, it’s hard to start reading in a higher place in the text, even after learning the material in class, which is a sign of a not good textbook, in my opinion.

The problems are pretty typical to what you'd find in a University Level Physics textbook: problems for each section in a chapter, along with some more challenging problems. However, the explanations given are very poor and hard to understand, explaining important topics like Newton's Laws of Motion and Kinetic Energy in 5-10 pages in what should be only 1-2 pages. If your class uses this as a textbook, I suggest you use other learning resources in addition.

You can't beat Free!!! It's a Free text book. I had to get this for Rowan College at Burlington County, Physic 2 class which I passed. I had to use this book for the sections on oscillation and waves. I remember having to pay 200 $ for physics Text book at Penn State. The book is really good and informative that explaining Physic, and it just as good as any college text book you have to pay for. If your school is asking you to get this free book, please write them a letter telling them how great they are for not being greedy. I know being a student you already broke as hell paying for the tuition.

College is expensive. Finding websites that offer free text books is absolutely amazing.

This is truly an amazing book, especially for its price. I used it in my class and found more material that I needed or could possibly cover, presented in a well organized and up to date fashion. I am glad it is available as part of a three volume set, as a single volume would be much too heavy to carry! I would still be using it if I had not retired last year. Its only flaw in my opinion is that it contains too much material (and that can hardly be a real problem.)

In paperback format, "Volume 1" is actually a two-book set. This is supported by multiple pictures in the listing, at least, it is if you view it in mobile. As far as I can tell, though, it's impossible to get Part 1.I have tried 3 times so far and I'm getting to the point where the class will be on Part 2 before I get the full set.

This textbook is very well done. This subject was my major in college so I have seen a few other books. This is well laid out, good summaries for each chapter, and the contents and goals of each chapter are clearly noted. An excellent textbook.

I bought this book for a university course in physics. It is available legitimately online for free (it is an OpenStax textbook), but I thought that it would be more convenient to read from a hardcopy text. The hardcopy text that I received is three years old (copyright is 2018). The hardcopy text is black and white, but the online text is in color. Color is used extensively in the online text for the presentation of graphs and the graphs become indecipherable when presented in black and white. Also there are fundamental errors in the hardcopy text which have subsequently been corrected in the online version. I even found that some of the chapter questions are different in the online versus hardcopy text. Overall I made a big mistake in purchasing this outdated and unauthentic textbook.
