A classic
They say you can build a better mousetrap but I donโt think you can build a better doorstop. There are so many different gadgets to choose from these days for the simple task of holding your door in the open position, and Iโve tried dozens of them. Then I came back to an old classic design thatโs almost identical to the one that was in my great-grandfatherโs house. Why? Because it works. No gimmicks, no magic, just a design that is intended to do one simple task. And it does it perfectly. WHY CHOOSE IT There are numerous similar ones to choose from, I chose this one because of its heavy diecast metal construction, with a simple steel spring to keep it up. There are two positions, you kick it down to hold the door open and you kick it up to snap into the upright position. Simple. One of the key things to look for is how many mounting holes it has and how they are located. To do its job properly a doorstop has two requirements. One is that the foot makes full contact with the floor surface and the other is that the thing is mounted firmly to the door. This one has four mounting holes, one in each corner. Many doors are hollow, which means some doorstop designs may not be able to attach to something solid. With four mounting holes your chances are better that you will have at least two and probably three that mount to the doorโs solid perimeter frame. That was true when I installed mine. WHAT I LIKE This is heavier than most of the ones I see in stores and can easily be used outdoors as well as indoors. The foot is large and solid but soft enough to be able to grab the floor surface to avoid slipping. I like that the foot is replaceable, standard replacements can be found in any hardware store. I like that the spring is strong and made to last - no gimmicks or fancy linkages that can (and will) wear out. I like that it is made in Taiwan, I have had very good experiences with anything Iโve bought that is made there. QUESTIONABLE While not actually a negative because it is purely your choice to buy it, is the fact that the exact same thing with a shinier chrome finish costs twenty bucks while the still silvery but not shiny one only costs eight bucks. That seems to be a lot to pay to have it look shinier. HINT When installing it, push your door to the position you want it to be when open. If thatโs not against a wall, for example the door is able to swing out farther, put a heavy box or something behind it so it canโt swing open any father. Then LAY the doorstop against the bottom corner of the door and let the foot rest on the floor surface. That will be the ideal location to mount the stop. Mark it with a pencil then drill the holes in your door. I have mine outdoors on an uneven concrete surface and when the door is open even the strongest breeze canโt shut it YES OR NO This replaced a much more expensive one that was supposed to automatically spring up. It did that for a while then broke. Iโve installed several other styles over the past few years and this one is by far the best and the price (for the non-shiny one) is just right. I like it.

the perfect door stop!
I was so happy to find this doorstop. The standard wedge door stops are too thick for my door and many of the ones I found were ugly and huge. This one is perfect. - It is well-proportioned for a door in an antique house - doesn't stand out. - It's simple to install if you have a drill - It holds fast on my hardwood floors - It's easy to raise and lower - I can even do it with my bare foot - When it's in the up position, it stays up. It doesn't flop down. It will even stay up if it's only part way up. - The door does not budge if you try to close it when the door stop is in the down position. - But you can push the door to open it more without raising the door stop. It just slides along the floor.

wrong drill bit size in instructions
This seems to be a good general-purpose door stop. However, save yourself some frustration. The instructions for steel doors say to use a 1/16 bit for screw,. My son looked at that doubtfully after looking at the provided screws He was right It took an 1/8 bit. Not a problem for someone who is generally handy but could frustrate a first timer

Strong enough to withstand commercial use, and stylish enough to not be an eye sore. I wish I would have found it sooner.

Two helpful installation suggestions
I believe this kick-down will work great, but two issues during installation. First, like another poster mentioned, the package says to use a 1/16" drill bit. You will need to use 1/8" instead. Second, the screws provided were no good. The first one snapped off with very little resistance. I removed it and tried a second screw, but it snapped off also. I found four similar screws in my tool box and they went right in and worked great. So, if you don't want to risk extra work, just go out and buy four "better" screws.

Works on laminate flooring too!
Easy to install, has 4 holes instead of only 3 like some other door stops and holds door very good even on laminate floors. We made the right choice.
