how loud is the sander?

Well, it is an orbital sander. On a scale of 1 - 10 when it is really going about a 4, with 1 being a deep woods meadow and 10 an Ozzy Osborne concert or the Space Shuttle launching. But it really works very good so it is worth it. Hope this helps.

I am buying this as a gift for my son and i know nothing about them. do i have to just buy the sanding papers or do i also have to buy a backing pad?
