How does this work? Does the left side bit spring up as the door passes over it & then you press it down to release door?

I guess so if it is floor mounted. Mine are wall mounted so they have to manually released to allow the gates to be closed. Hope this helps

Is the handle holding area adjustable to more snugly fit the door handle

The door stopper is fitted to a wall outside to stop the door from banging in the wind. The design of the door stopper is for the door to slide up the sloping section and rest in the gap between that and that fitted to the wall. This type of gate and door stopper would not seem to be that which you are looking for, sorry. It works well for us at the bottom of the door. Hope this helps
