Mr. Pen- Professional Metal Compass Set, 7 pcs

Update: I contacted the seller and his response was super fast and sorted out the problem right away. We now have a compass that works well and that one must have been a one off one that has a problem. My son loves it and the feature where you push both bottoms to expand it quickly is super useful when he is doing his geometry homework. That way, he doesn’t have waste time using the small dial to expand the leg or reduce the size. ————- (Old review) I was excited to get this for my son for his Geometry class. So was he. All are great such as refills, extra screws, the little metal plate as a screw driver to tighten the screw for the leg that bends, additional leg to draw a big circle (although this isn't necessary for his class), but one slight oversight which is annoying to use is the screw that tightens the legs from bending. The screw head is so shallow, I cannot tighten it before threading the screw. Needless to say that I cannot tighten it. So, when my son uses it, it kept bending when he's putting his point down on the paper firmly so that the compass won't slip off. I told him to grab the bottom part of the leg while he is pushing down on it. Contemplating on returning it and see if we can get the proper one to tighten the legs. But the inconvenience of it... sigh... If they could just replace the screw (if that screw can be replaced), that would be perfect. All other features function fine and would have been a great compass with 5 stars.

I had previously ordered a different compass here on Amazon, and it was absolutely terrible. Thumb screws that were too tiny and were plastic, so if you tighten them just a little bit too much they broke. No well-defined channels for the lead or point to sit in, so centering them was impossible, making the setup process a total exercise in frustration. I went back to Amazon to find something better, and thought I'd give Mr. Pen a try. Well, the mail just got here about an hour ago, and there it was - my new Mr. Pen compass! The clouds parted and the sun shone down! I love you Mr. Pen! Please don't tell my husband! I couldn't be happier with this compass! Solid construction - it's got some weight to it, but not too much. Clearly defined channels for the lead and the metal point - they just sit right in there and are ready to go. Thumb screws that are the right size to not make you feel like your hands are ridiculously large, and the button release levers for adjustments are magical - no turning the wheel for hours to change from a tiny circle to a large one! The extension arm has a widely adjustable pencil holder that you can fit pretty much any writing implement in - even a Sharpie. And to top it all off - a mustache decal! I couldn't be happier with my new Mr. Pen compass!! Thanks for making my day, Mr. Pen :-)

For the most part, the compass is reasonably well built. I was excited to get it, but after using it, am not quite as thrilled. 1) the angle adjustments mid-leg are not as stiff as I'd like. I'd probably have chosen a solid leg instead. 2) The universal pencil holder is plastic and also not quite as stiff. Screws on it are plastic, leaving me cautious about damaging them. 3) It includes a four extra knobs... and two needle points, more than needed, but no extra screws should any of those be lost. Maybe balance those extra pieces out to just two extra knobs and two extra pins. 4) The extension arm was difficult to put on, due to tolerances being slightly off, but once on was quite solid. 5) Not quite as clear in the video is that the end point can be slid anywhere along its length (+) but the end piece is also plastic (-) 6) I do like the adustment knob. But, while my last compass didn't have one, the actual hinge was much stiffer. See photo. I believe this is largely due to it having a bigger screw creating friction at the joint. With this one, the hing itself has two smaller screws and is looser. The threads on the wheel still give enough play that it is actually less precise feeling - though that may be partly because it is almost twice the size. The arc drawn on the paper shows this 1-2mm of play that can occur. 7) The last bit - and this is where I have a hard time articulating, but caries the most weight: This compass is not as easy to use as my previous one (which broke unfotunately and I can't find the tip). I'm not sure if is because the points are not as sharp, if it is just bigger, and heavier, but it tended to lose hold on the pivot more easily, which was frustrating. 8) A better case could be nice. But not a deal breaker. My conclusion - comparing this to my old compass is not apples to apples. The old was cheap, but felt more precise, probably largely because it was only half the size, with solid legs, and solid connection to the pencil holder. For this model, it is more flexible, but the additional features come at a cost of precision. Still pretty good, but if you want precision, you need something that is either machined with very high tolerances and better engineered, or a simple, solid compass. Price aside, I'd give it 3 starts. but it was cheap, so 4 stars. I don't have the heart to rate it at 3 givent the price.

This thing is way beyond what I expected! I needed a compass that made a10" circle for a mask pattern I wanted to try. The first one I bought, the description said 9". Not really what I was looking for, but I also didn't want to pay a lot, as I might use it once, not like the pattern, and never use it again The description said 9", the packaging said 8", and it only open enough to make a 7" circle. I contacted the seller, as they asked in the packaging. They immediately refunded my money. But I still needed a compass. I found one that said it made a 10" circle and had a video. It was from the same company as the one I'd just had refunded, so I felt safe giving them another shot. Wow. This thing. I'm not a professional... anything, but this compass is definitely professional quality. It's got some actual heft to it. It is just way beyond what I was expecting. Plus, it cost less than the others that claimed to be what I was looking for. I would recommend this to anyone who needed a compass, large or small. And you can't beat the customer service!!

Everything is good. Comes with replacement parts. The only caution I would have is keep an eye on the two joints (see green arrows). They don't lock in place so make sure they are in the correct position when you use the compass. They aren't actually loose, but you might accidentally jostle a joint open while using and that would compromise the work. Just note that the joint can move if you're careless. The ends can only swing in slightly and never out so as long as you keep some tension on the spread you'll have no problem. (see follow up comment)

It feels very sturdy, I've no complaint with the quality of the make. I'm not a professional, I bought this for at projects, so maybe I just don't have the knack of this but no matter how I try to keep the legs straight, those two lower hinges give too easily. I tried tightening them and the screws wouldn't budge. It takes too much time resetting the legs, having to hold them at the base carefully so they don't give in, I've tried everything. I took a drafting class in high school, I'm not totally unfamiliar with how to use a compass. If you're not a professional that needs and knows how to handle all these extra joints, don't bother with this one. Too much trouble.

This compass set should not be on the market for sale! There are so many flaws and problems with this thing that I have a hard time finding a starting point to describe them. First of all, nothing was secured in the thin transparent product box, and everything was loose clanging against each other and rattling with the sound of metal and plastic banging around. The thin plastic product box itself was torn in different places, and the compass had banged around inside the box so much that its needle and lead points had lodged themselves into the bottom of the box and sticking out of the bottom of the box a good three eighths of an inch. Beyond this, the compass which is made of plastic at the top (the handle and the plate covering the arm hinges) isn't even straight. In other words, the handle which is supposed to be aligned with the arms is actually at an angle against the arms. And the adjustment screw rod is not horizontal, meaning that the screw holes in the two arms aren't lined up properly. The components such as the pen/pencil adapter and the technical drawing pen handle are made of incredibly cheap plastic. I never opened the box, because this piece of garbage is going back immediately. I could see all the deficiencies through the transparent plastic box's cover and thankfully didn't even have to open the box to observe the problems with this disaster of a product. Just don't waste your money on this compass. Seriously, I wouldn't take it if they gave it to me for free; it's that bad.

A great little kit. And at this price point you'll do no better. Tons of do-dads to have you drawing circles till the cows come home. We're talking..big circles, small circles, medium circles. Circles for days baby! Mine shows up with a small flaw on one of the accessories so I emailed their customer service. The info is provided on a small card in the tool pouch. Maybe 10min later Courtni from Mr.Pen hit me up with the option to replace or refund my purchase. That's rockstar service in my book. I chose replacement and it's all good in the hood. So dear friends, in conclusion.. BUY IT!!! Now if you'll excuse me, I got circles to draw. Mic drop.

Problem with many compasses is that the radius can vary during use, with the slightest bump, or uneven pressure when drawing. The Mr Pen compass is sturdy, has a sharp point and almost every movable piece can be easily secured by tightening the various screws. The only bits I couldn’t tighten, I immobilised with a little cellophane tape or electrical tape. I can now draw at least 20 circles with the same radius, without checking and readjusting the radius for each circular arc. If you’ve ever has trouble using the expensive brand-name compasses, you might be pleasantly surprised how the Mr Pen compass is *much* more reliable. I heartily recommend this compass. The only downside is the international freight cost which more than doubled the price - even with Amazon Prime - the cost is disguised in the cost of the compass, and not separately itemised. In the US, you’ll get one 1/3 of the price I paid.
