    Narrations of a culture instead of stories

I know I am unlearned on most other cultures. I do read about the practices and views of people in other parts of the world. Their worldviews have been going on for a long, long time. But I still can't grasp the notion that in this reality with our world encircling communications, people still accept a world as described in these stories. I haven't finished all of them yet. It is a struggle. Supposedly the authors are people who have tried to stand against both the despotic Shah as well as the fanatically religious revolutionaries. But the stories assume that women are inferior, religious practices are acceptable and "resistance is futile" for the most part. The animosity and negativity of most of the stories is wearing. I suppose it is a good thing for me to read as it makes me much more positive about my world.
