violations
As the Band of the Hawk is destroyed one by one, Guts is desperate to save Casca from the violations of the demons. Things take a slight turn for the better when the Skull King arrives but after this volume nothing will ever be the same again for Guts or Casca. This story is where Berserk officially grows its beard, where Miura finds his groove. Not just the writing, but the artwork has improved, too. I get the sense that a lot more planning went into the overall trajectory of The Golden Age than The Black Swordsman.

"Is this hell?! Did we sin that much?!"
This is what fans were waiting for, the volume that makes everything come together. Now we finally understand Guts behavior when we first met him in volume 1, as the Black Swordsman, and we also get to find out how he lost his arm and why he hates Griffith. This volume almost feels like a rebirth of all the main characters, since they suffer a transformation that is so drastic, that it is hard to picture it by using a different metaphor. The level of violence is at an all-time high, but once again, there is a clear purpose behind it, and in this case it comes with an important psychological aspect. You could almost say that Guts undergoes a proficient psychological torture. The nature of the action also permits Miura to showcase his talents, since the complexity of the drawings, and the level of details they require, are astounding and must have taken a huge amount of time to achieve. This volume also contains the scenes that are seen at the end of the anime, but it also goes way beyond that. I recommend those people that want to see what happens after the anime, to start the manga from the beginning anyway, since there are many novel elements in the previous volumes. I am looking forward to the next installment, since Guts starts on his new journey, one that promises to be full of action, violence, and hateful vengeance!

Everything changes....
This volume, #13, is where the anime left off. This book gives you the final episode of the anime in manga-form, but delivers more, revealing how Gutts escaped the Hell-Eclipse, and the last couple of chapters showing how life seemed to really kick him when he was down, and the beginning of him picking himself up to get revenge on the one we all knew he would come to hate, the man who was like his brother, Griffith. The flashback to his time with the Band of the Hawk and his friendship with Griffith comes to a crashing end with some horrible consequences, and the true story of revenge finally starts.Be warned, this volume especially is brutal. Many die, but theres also some really graphic scenes, as the pieces at the end of the anime are made even more horrible.Theres also a really sad moment that brought a tear to my eye, involving Gutts and a tear of blood after the end of the Eclipse.
