How to Start a Home-Based Day-Care Business (Home-Based Business Series)

I’ve only had this book for a week and I love it so much! It’s very informative and gives great ideas/tips. This book has motivated me even more to have my own daycare!

I love this book! Great detail information for anyone in the childcare field.

I think this book would be especially helpful for individuals who already have the means to start an in-home daycare. The sections I found most useful were those on managing behaviors you might expect to encounter while operating a daycare. I have my master's degree in teaching and found this book provided sound advice for interaction with young children. Financial roadblocks prevented me from started my own business, but if you've already got your finances in a row, this book would give you some more insight into implications of running your own daycare out of your home.

I started reading and couldn't put the book down.

I have been going to my local public library to borrow books on exploring the possibility of starting a home-based day care business. I have read many books, and each book has its unique value to offer on the subject.Although I appreciated the Windows-formatted CD that came with  Start & Run a Home Daycare (Self-Counsel Press Business Series)  and the 25-day schedule of activities that came with  Start Your Own at Home Child Care Business, 1e , I really loved the guidance section in Steelsmith's book.For example, Steelsmith covers:"Communication Techniques that Help Children Behave" and supplies you with tips for1. Active Listening ("milk is for drinking, not for spilling" and "when someone spills milk on my carpet, I feel very mad, because I have to clean it up" or "boy, you feel read mad that you can't have juice. But remember, milk is for drinking, not for spilling.")2. I-Messages, such as the second quoted statement in item #1.3. A Better Way - stating your way is to..., my way is to..., what's a better way? -- this helps to minimize power struggles and create a problem-solving standpoint from which to launch toward solutions that help the child feel empowered to make better choices. What a way to go for child-proofing in advance in the face of peer pressure or authoritarian figures!Steelsmith goes further with ways to increase good behavior, decrease difficult behavior, and how to foster good social skills. I found that the specific examples in the discipline/guidance section to be very great modeling especially for caregivers who are learning how to work with children in different stages of development and age groups.I particularly like these examples of scenarios and communication techniques because they go beyond the typical time-out or distraction suggestions. I actually would have liked to have read this book as a new mom, because looking at Steelsmith's list I realize I learned a lot of the suggestions she had along the way, stumbling and tripping on the fly, while I still questioned if I had made the right choice at the time. I would have loved her list of guidance techniques for the 9-month-old and up and especially the two's and three's!In fact, I was speeding through this book rather fast until I got to the discipline/guidance section and realized that I needed to take a pause and appreciate the gifts Steelsmith offered here, including the Ten Common Guidance Problems with 3 methods to address each: 1. grabs toys from others, 2. whines, 3. doesn't follow directions, 4. cries at naptime, 5. calls people names, 6. won't pick up toys, 7. hits others, 8. cries when parent leaves, 9. complains "no one plays with me" and 10. picky eater.I felt I had struck gold and that I had found my fellow caregiver support in Steelsmith. I almost wanted to buy the fourth edition, since my local library only had the fourth edition, before I came across this latest 6th edition and realized I should write this review (since the 6th edition had no reviewers yet) to encourage any customer to buy the latest edition. Based on the fourth edition, I am anxious to see what Steelsmith has expanded and revised in this 6th edition. If there is anything noteworthy to add about the guidance section in this newest edition, I will update my review in the near future.

Good book but I didn't realise it was American but doesn't matter. Still very informative and nicely presented, thank you!
