We have left it on timed to go off and come on again through the night

How much per hour to run

Depends on your enerytariff but I reckon about 23/25 p per hour. Of course it has thermostat which knocks off when temp reached so actually I find it quite economical

Is it safe to leave on when no one is around?

No heating appliances are ever recommended to be left unattended, however the item is fitted with an overheat protection shut off feature and a timer.
