Review: nice, high quality pieces - my wife, while garage sale shopping with her sister, came across a very old looking table that was extremely dusty. Always one for a bargain and since she loves to restore wood items, she picked it up for just a couple bucks. My first opinion when she brought it home was, "please don't bring it in the house", but a few days later, after she cleaned it up, she did and I realized it was a chess table. After she spent a few hours cleaning it up, it was actually in pretty good shape, even though it didn't really match our furniture, we parked it by the entry way of our house (inside, mind you). After seeing the table my boys (17,14) went to the closet and found there old plastic chess set pieces and started to play (on the new table). After seeing this go on for the next week, I decided to purchase a better set of wood pieces that would look a little nicer than the plastic pieces they were using. I came across this set, it looked really nice, the price was right so i purchased it. It came super quick, thanks desertcart, and it goes absolutely perfect with the table. Its been a few months and although they don't play as much chess anymore, maybe only once a week, I never put the pieces away in the nice little wood box they came in, nor do I put them in the chess table drawer, I leave them out on the table, all set up, waiting for the next match..... (they have been dropped a few times, nothing broken off, and we have tile in the entry, the pieces have a really nice weight to them, not heavy but definitely not light like they were cheap or anything, have had no issues with the underside felt neither....the detail is very nice, i have never purchased a set like this before and I am very pleased with the quality..)
Review: Simple, Well Made Chess Set - I bought the No. 5 set with the 3.5 inch king with a 1.25 inch base. I think this size works well with 1.75 to 2.0 inch board squares. The pieces looked very nice, were symetrical, and not warped, like you sometimes get with inexpensive sets. They are felted and lightly weighted which is also a feature you dont' always get. The storage box was well made, jointed, glued and stained, but not lined with felt. The pieces fit lying down but not standing up. I did put felt pads on the bottom to keep it from scratching the furniture. I think this is a good set or general practice and playing and so on.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Where is this made?**
A: The box and pieces are both made in Poland. The box is made of Birch and stained as Walnut. The pieces are made from the wood of Hornbeam trees grown in Poland which are one of the hardest trees in existence, much harder than Oak, Acacia.  Hornbeam wood is white in color and the light pieces are stained as maple and the dark pieces are stained as walnut or Acacia. The fact both are stained explains for the consistency in color of the box and the pieces. The pieces are polished and not painted with a lacquer or polyurethane. I bought three of these boxes with pieces and bought regular size extra queens from three trees workshop that were made of Acacia and Boxwood in India for $12 per pair for my chessboards I made with 1-3/4 inch squares. Very pleased. Wegiel does not provide extra queens, and my extra queens are smaller in height than the ones with this set. I researched everywhere for extra wood queens and they were either smaller or much larger. Hope this all helps.

**Q: What is the actual diameter of the king base?  Customers are showing varying results.**
A: 1 1/4 inches

**Q: would they fir ok on a 1 and 7/8" squares board?**
A: Yes they would.  And you will love them as they are beautiful for the price.  Great quality too.

**Q: anyone know what kind of finish is on these pieces- polyurethane?  lacquer?  I want to antique them with red and brown highlights.**
A: The case and pieces are not finished with a laquer or polyurotane, they are polished. Polishing involves wet hand sanding with finishing sandpaper in various steps usually starting with 320 grit and working up in steps using 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, 5000 etc..  Same procedure is used restoring headlights but in tht case chemicals cleaner is used in the final polishing part. In the case of the pieces I just bought and received, I believe only a 600 grit was used, the higher grits lead to a smoother feel. If you apply multiple coats of a water based polyurothane to these pieces and use a polishing technique going all the way up to the 3000 grit sandpper after the last coat you will have a smooth shiny glass type look and feel. Easy to do with chess boards, but very labor intensive doing the pieces. My advice is leave them alone, they are beautiful and you only need a damp cloth to clean them. One or two coats of waterbased polyurothane will protect them from scratches and body oil and other fluids from attacking the wood. If they are for kids, add the poly and hand polish using 320, 500 or 600, and finally 1000 grit paper. keep clean with damp cloth.

I started my chess collection many years ago. I own many sets made with crystal, glass, plastic, metal, marble and wood. This Staunton set is one of my favourites, considering their quality and the price. Excellent finished pieces, great size and weight. I only want to give 2 little recommendations to the manufacter: 1. To cover the inside of the box with the same felt used in the bottom of the pieces. This will protect them against scratches. 2. To improve a bit the finish of the box. However, without a doubt, I made a good purchase with this set... UPGRADE REVIEW A small but important detail that I noticed some days ago is that the cross of the dark King is not aligned, it seems like the Pisa Tower!!!
