There's a reason this is called a classic
I first read this book decades ago, and faintly recalled enjoying it. So it was truly a wonderful experience to pick it up again in this version.Francis was the most lovable of saints. He didn't just work at becoming holy, he plunged recklessly, helpless with love, toward God. He seemed always happy. Without bitterness, no matter what was done to him.Poverty he embraced like a lover. In fact, the entire of the world and everything in it became transformed with love of God to Francis. Fire that burned him. Rain that lashed him. It was all part of God's splendid universe and His love poured out upon us.I had forgotten that "St Anthony of Padua was one of the chosen disciples and companions of St Francis". When the heretics rejected St Anthony's preaching, he "went down to the seashore...began to speak to the fishes", And they came to hear. There are a smattering of woodblock style pictures in the book all looking a little gothic or renaissance.

A great book, but ... .
It's nice to have this gem of a classic in an expanded edition. Unfortunately though this printing is difficult to read. The ink isn't clear, the letters "smudge" together, and the paper is thin enough one sees the print on the other side.

The Little Flowers of St. Francis
I find this version much easier to read because of its plain language than the other one I purchased. We are using it for a summer reading for our churches online summer blog. Also note, I purchased 3 copies for myself and two other participants.I find St. Francis and his Order of Friars to be far more spiritual than I imagine I would ever be. However, I do modify by staying in touch with the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, through daily spiritual readings and participating in a prayer chain, which I have seen results of prayer for others. I believe in having a generous heart, too.

Short Stories for the Heart
I don't consider the Little Flowers of St. Francis a history book nor is it fiction, rather the book contains stories that plant flowers in ones heart that continue to grow after you've read them, like "What is Joy" or John of Alverna encountering Jesus in the woods. I read these stories to my children as they were growing up in the hope that the seed would sprout and become. They loved them.I also give this book regularly as a gift, and I know why. Naturally, you have to know to whom you're giving it. Thus far, I've only heard praises for the book.Enjoy the Little Flowers. They're meant to bloom in hearts.

Nothing more inspiring than the flowers of St. Francis
St. Francis is a wonderful, wonderful saint. He's inspiring and thought-provoking, and this book really showed some examples of just how amazing of a saint he is. This book teaches you confidence in God, resistance to sin and the devil, how to love God more and how "more" will never be enough. I loved the shortness of each story. You could easily read one per day, and then reflect on it that entire day. I think my favorite story in this book is the one about Brother Juniper, telling the beggar that he couldn't give him his habit, but if he took it off his back he wouldn't complain.All-in-all, definitely worth the read.God bless.

55 Year Hiatus
When I was in the Army 55 years ago, I was first introduced to this book by a fellow soldier who lent me a copy. At the time, I was 20 years old and not yet a Catholic, but I immediately took to the book and loved it. When I found it here on Amazon, I welcomed the opportunity to acquire and re-read it. If you have any interest in St. Francis, you too will probably love this book. My interest has been lifelong.

Book buying
I recently began to search for everything written about St. Francis. This is far the best available to understand him and discover his life in truth. I compared it with written biographies and it holds all that is needed to know. It is written in a clear, simple language that is very enjoyable.
