Authentic Tasting King Cake
Extremely authentic King Cake. I added fresh pecans to the praline mixture. The glaze was a little skimpy, but it was easy enough to make some extra. My husband said it was the best King Cake he's ever had. The dough had a nice hint of sweetness. We have already purchased more.

If you're buying it - let's get the best results, right?
I'm giving this 4 stars - but that is because I think the directions could have been written differently. I've listed a few recommendations that I think might give a better result to other bakers. I bake a LOT, so over the years have figured out some tricks. Hope these help. The packaging is excellent and EVERYTHING, is included - yes that means the little plastic baby. The directions are easy to follow, BUT, though they say to add "softened" butter to the original dough, I would recommend you MELT and cool the butter a bit. Also, have the egg at room temperature. (You can do this by putting an egg into warm water for about 30 minutes prior to use - and this is good to do for ANY baking project.) All ingredients in baking should be at room temperature (unless they state otherwise) to ensure that the ingredients get emulsified and better incorporated in the dough. In this recipe it's especially important if you're mixing them in the plastic bag that is also included in the box. (For my family, I added a bit more melted butter, brown sugar and of course pecans to the praline filling, but that's up to your preference.) When it comes out of the oven, I quickly coat the top with a light spray (or coating) of butter. I know this is contrary to what most people do, but on any type of sweet bread/danish type of cake or roll, if you want that delicate, light top, this is how you achieve it. (Same as with a loaf of bread. If you don't want a hard crust on top - run a cube of butter over the top a few times immediately as it comes hot out of the oven. It softens the crust to make it soft and tender.) The final cake came out perfect. The taste and texture are lovely. Some reviewers said it was dry, but that's possibly because of the quality of the ingredients they used (maybe margarine instead of unsalted butter?) or they might have overworked the dough when they were rolling it out or in shaping it, and/or they over-cooked it. Here's the thing though - this cake mix is pricey. "King Cake" in essence is a coffee cake - it's made from a your basic sweet dough recipe that is filled with a brown sugar/melted butter/lightly-spiced/pecan-praline type mixture. You top it with a standard powdered sugar icing and colored sugar. Yes, it's easier to get it all in a "kit" but these are ingredients you probably have in your kitchen. Unless you have more money than space or time to go to the supermarket - do it yourself! That way you'll have some of the ingredients left over to make ANOTHER one of these delightful coffee cake creations in a few weeks!! :o)

I couldn’t do a minus star…..👎
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !!!!👎👎👎👎👎👎This was a giant flop!!!! DOUGH never raised!!!! I am an experienced cook, so I know what a big problem is …. I don’t think the yeast was any good. (I have never run across that before). Luckily I had a quick back up plan….I’d never buy again! As an alternate choice Look for recipe using cinnamon coffee rolls, this worked perfectly….no issues….

Not much here for the price.
This makes a good cake but it is a VERY small cake! So if your group is bigger, you might just find recipie on line or buy two boxes of mix. The praline filling is pretty skimpy too. The plastic baby is included but it is also very small so be sure to warm people not familiar with this tradition to chew carefully so they dont swallow it. The colored sugars for the top are included and an envelope of powdered sugar for glaze. VERY small amount of powered sugar, so you will probably need to use more. For the price, it is quite expensive, but you dont hav eto color sugar and you do get the baby. But $16 for a little baby and colored sugar is a bit steep.
