Good Choice
I’ve used this in my garden & the best things I like is that the prong is long, it has a large dial, takes no batteries & is easy to use & read.

Good tester - be creative
Works fine, though the dial seems backward. Instructions say to insert 2-3" into the ground, but no markings as to where the 2-3" would be on the stem (am using a rubberband).

Great product
This is exactly what I wanted for checking soil temperature before putting in different seeds/plants. Snap peas/radishes don't mind cool soil, tomato plants need warmer soil, and I find pumpkin seeds need it warmer still. This thermometer is great to use throughout planting season, temperature reading responds quickly, and the dial is easy to read, don't need to bend down to see it. (This is my second thermometer: I accidentally left my first one in the garden over the summer, forgot about it and ran my tractor tiller over it in the fall. They do not handle tilling well!)

I would not buy this again although it does give you the ground temperature. In the Spring I put in the ground over night and ground temperature was about 40 degrees. I was monitoring for about 55 degrees to put down crabgrass control. I would monitor different parts of my yard and temperatures should have been fairly consistent. There would be 5 to 10 degrees difference. Its just not very accurate.

Using it everyday
We built a cold frame for getting a jump start on our plants this year. We don't leave the dial in the soil all day - we take readings every morning and store the thermometer inside when not in use. If you're wondering if you can just leave it in the soil and forget it, I can't answer that question.Extremely responsive and when comparing with my other thermometers, appears to be very accurate. Easy and simple to use.
