They work well, as long as there's no "bridge"
These are the first thing I've found that protect my hostas from slugs. I use these in conjunction with slug traps, but even when traps are empty, the hostas still don't get eaten, as long as fully inside the collar. As soon as leaves hang down, or other plants touch the collar, the slugs use this as a bridge, though. They're easy to use, although if the soil is compacted, it's hard to push them in very far, but that does not seem to matter, as long as slugs can't get underneath. They're bigger on outside than I imagined: 23 cm top outside diameter, 18 cm top inside diameter, 12.5 cm inside bottom diameter and 12.5 cm high. So the plants can't be too close together, also because of the bridging thing.. They also help protect young plants from being trampled by my cats, which is an added bonus. They'll work for any type of plant you can fit through a 12.55 cm diameter opening, bearing in mind the bridging thing.. I've managed to get them over some smallish starter bushes, which is easier before planting, but possible afterwards.I just wish I'd bought the packet of 18, as far better value..

They will be easy to use
Once it is time for gardening again, they will be easy to set on the ground.Hopefully this will help keep the slugs at bay.

This snail looked cosy.
These aren't great. This snail got in, and there was no overhanging foliage. I didn't have a single successful dahlia last summer. A couple of days ago, I planted some chrysanthemums and, noticing damage this afternoon, I put these collars on all of them. When I went out slug hunting this evening (yes, I'm that crazy lady!) there was a large slug sitting on top of one of my chrysanthemums. They may slow these little critters down a bit, but that's a much as I can say. I'm going to try spraying them with WD40, see if that helps. EDIT: Nope, the slugs still got in!

Very good!
Does the job for me and my courgettes and broccoli are thriving. Easy to use and will last for a long time. Wish it was a little bit cheaper so I can buy many more.

My dahlias have finally managed to get out of the ground!!
The slugs kept getting my dahlias, they would just get out of the ground and the slugs would get them again even though I have been removing ever slug or snail I find in the garden and putting saw dust around the plants. Put these on as soon as they arrived and a few weeks later my dahlias as finally starting to get to a decent size and producing buds. The slugs have definitely cut my flowering season short this year but as least we should get some flowers soon. Will be putting these out every year straight away from now on.

Not so effective at doing the job described
I have been using these this year for the first time, but unfortunately they seem to attract more slugs than they are repelling. Even if pushed firmly into the earth, slugs still manage to get at the plants, and it is not easy to protect overhanging leaves after the plants have got bigger. I had to remove two plants and grow them in pots because of the slug damage they suffered. I removed a couple of the slug collars and found slugs living under the lip - not ideal! The one slightly unexpected advantage of these was that when I wanted to remove the two plants to pot them up, it was easy to get them out in one go because of the collar. As a rule, though, I don't think these are effective in gardens with a significant population of slugs.

It works!
Did not manage to push the dish fully into the soil but only one of them failed to protect the plant. Would buy again. They look a bit odd in the garden but worth it to protect the plant until it is established.
