Not only does it smoothly shave off imperfections, but it bevels the sharp edges too! There are 2 grooves perpendicular to the blade. You set the sharp edge of your soap into the groove of your choice (2 sizes) and slide the soap along. Bam! Beautiful edges! I used to spend from 5-10 min. cleaning up a single bar of soap. Now it takes only seconds. I use a corn silk brush to gently brush away any remaining "crumbs" and then package the soap. Oh! The wood is finished, not raw, so it will stay smooth.
