The mating surface is a flat o-ring. I would have liked a spherical joint.

Fits inch and 1/2 ID PVC pipe well
Standard CPVC union. I’m using it to connect up to return supply pipe from my pool but before the pump. These joints do not require tape or putty and seal well and this one’s no exception. The price point was good.
