I already own a mandoline slicer with a shredding disc, but the holes are too wide to make vegetable "linguine". I researched a variety of different spiral-type vegetable cutters (including The Spiralizer), but after reading many reviews on Amazon and elsewhere I decided to get this highly rated and very reasonably priced Precision Kitchenware Ultra Sharp Dual Julienne Peeler / Vegetable Peeler instead.I went grocery shopping yesterday and tonight I tried making zucchini noodles (also called "zoodles") for the first time using my new Precision Kitchenware julienne peeler. Ultra sharp is right! This peeler made short work of my zucchini, shredding it neatly into even julienne strips with little effort. The julienne blade clogged a bit until I got the hang of using it properly, but it took literally just a few seconds to periodically run the blade under the tap and clear it out with a clean toothbrush (which I have now dedicated as my julienne peeler brush). I sauteed a few sliced portobello mushrooms in some herb-infused olive oil, then added the zoodles along with a diced fresh tomato, some pesto and some grated Parmesan and tossed the contents with tongs just until everything was warmed through. Absolutely delish! Even my husband, who doesn't really care for zucchini, loved my first attempt at making Zoodles.I still need to figure out the best way to hold the zucchini while I'm slicing the julienne strips with the peeler so that I can keep my fingers away from the sharp blades while cutting the entire length of the vegetable with each pass. My old plastic one I bought during college was wearing down. We had had a good run together, but it wasn't doing it for me anymore. I used that sucker twice a week to make sushi in order to peel the skin off of my carrots and cucumbers, skin away thin wide slices, and then julienne them with my santoku. It was a process that worked to a point, but I knew it would be easier. I even tried my father's manodline to make the julienne slices much easier- but sadly a 30 year old mandoline was still a 30 year old mandoline- and I packed it away after the first horrible pathetic try.When I decided to search for a new peeler, I had never dreamed of the idea that peelers with julienne blades even existed WITH a regular peeler. There were a few other options I saw, but there was something about this one that sold me on first glance. I do both twice a week for a meal I cook every week: peel and julienne. Could I do that with one tool? Why, I didn't even need to dirty my santoku, I could just slip through it with one go! No, it wouldn't make my little slices as thin or as petite as I could manually by chopping, which I soon discovered. Yet there was still something gloriously simple about peeling a fresh carrot, and then moments later making a few quick swipes to have my nice thin strips to put into my sushi.The only downside I found was that it was a little tricky to clean, as the one blade loved to eat little bits of the carrot I had dragged through- though a little extra water in the right places did the trick. It also does not like working with smaller portions (like 1/8th of a carrot) and the blades on both sides are incredibly sharp too.Overall, I'm extremely excited to use this handy little tool in as much as I can in the future.
