In the early '60s, the newest, strongest, most pervasive influence in jazz was the Gospel music of southern Negro church congregations, and few personified this more succinctly than pianist Les McCann. This in-person recording at The Bit a coffee house on Hollywood s Sunset Strip is a great example of his return- to-the-roots style, with McCann and his trio speaking directly from the musical heritage of his people immediate, emotional, and very communicative. With the leader's off-hand announcements and remarks, this album seems almost an inside performance for friends. With the splendid support of Leroy Vinnegar and Ron Jefferson, the trio brings out the deep feelings of the American Negro music. "We're just trying to play good, happy music," said McCann. "We try for a group pulsation. Most music you hear is so tense, it makes you feel twisted up inside. Now, so far we've never tried to impress anybody; we don't want to impress anybody just to get a happy feeling on the stand." As these recordings show, they do that and much more besides.

Avid Jazz Senior & Les McCann Fan
I just ordered this CD to add to others I have purchased over the years. This is my favorite and I have been kicking myself for not buying it sooner. I have been a fan of Les McCann since the 60's. In fact I saw him on campus at Los Angeles City College one time. I was present at "The Bit" nightclub when some of the songs were recorded in 1960. I owned the Vinyl many years ago but it got damaged. I remember "A Foggy Day" and play it constantly on my computer (I bought the MP3). I crank up the volume at the ending.I remember the opening remarks at The Bit that are on the CD. I also remember him playing "The Shout" and "Not for Me" that night. I saw LeRoy Vinegar several years later. He was playing with a small Trio at Bob Burns Restaurant in Newport Beach, California.I am a 79 year old Jazz enthusiast.Update (July, 2022):This is still my favorite song: "A foggy Day in London Town". Am still listening to the great Les McCann and now I am 85!

"THE GENIUS OF SOUL-JAZZ"
FINALLY! One of my favorite "Albums" of all-time is a CD - Like the previous reviewer, I had the pleasure of seeing Les McCann's trio (LeRoy Vinegar/Bass and Ron Jefferson/Drums) in person - I saw them twice at The Bit, where this CD was recorded - I still have and listened to the album - I also put it on a Cassette and still played it in the car (although the sound was getting pretty bad) - now with the CD, not only great sound, but also those extra added tracks including a great version of one of my all-time favorite songs, GREEN DOLPHIN STREET - Les was the master of the soul-jazz piano sound of the late 50's into the early 70's (only Gene Harris and THE THREE SOUNDS were even close) - if you don't believe me, listen to his version of A FOGGY DAY IN LONDON TOWN on this CD - I also remember seeing Les (a photography "Buff") on the sidelines taking pictures at the Laker games in the early 60's when they had first come to L.A. - "ENJOY and Keep Listening to the Sounds of Jazz" -

The first few songs sound horrible then a few sound OK and then sound horrible
Just received my copy today and have a question for those who have it on Fresh Sound Label. The first few songs sound horrible then a few sound OK and then sound horrible. I had this originally LP on Liberty and don't remember it sounding like this CD does. How does your recording sound..perhaps I got a bum one. I realize its a live recording and do expect some background noise but this sounds real bad.

McCann Plays The Shout
I've been a fan of Les McCann since the 1960's and met him atShelly's Mann Hole in Hollywood. His The Shout stands out asone of his all time greatest albums in my collection. HisLTD group swings, and the remastered album with added tracksis a terrific production -- a pleasure.

Great live perforamane from three different albums
I want to note that RCB's February 27, 2015 review is accurate regarding sound quality. I can only guess what Fresh Sounds had to work with to remaster this album, but this is one of the very few albums I have from that label that is spotty. You can pick up hints of the sound quality from the sound samples on this page. You can also pick up hints about the performances and that is why I gave this album five stars anyway. If you are an audiophile this is probably going to rank in the one or two star category, so please bear that in mind before ordering. For me it's all about the music, and this is live McCann at his best. Early McCann anyway. This album represents everything that was recorded live at the Bit coffeehouse in Los Angeles. McCann has his McCann Ltd. drummer, Ron Jefferson, but his trio's bassist (Herbie Lewis) is replaced by West Coast great Leroy Vinnegar. The album is actually a compilation of three different Pacific Jazz albums that among them contain all of the tracks that were recorded live on July 16 and 17, 1960.Tracks 1 through 9 are the original album titled Les McCann Ltd. Plays The Shout. Track 10 is from a Pacific Jazz compilation of various artists titled This Is The Blues, Vol. 1, and the final three tracks are from another album titled From the Top of the Barrel that features four other tracks from McCann's performances at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop that were recorded in December 1960. The missing four tracks can be found on the album titled Les McCann Ltd. in San Francisco , but they feature McCann's own bassist, Herbie Lewis.Bottom line: the sound quality may be spotty and the crowd noise a distraction, but the music is excellent and this does represent everything that was recorded at the Bit on those two July nights - all of which was previously scattered among three albums.
