Great helmet, horrible Amazon delivery.
This helmet is comfortable, lightweight, visually appealing, and at a great price. I can’t comment of the durability just yet, but thanks to the delivery from Amazon, it’s already aged like a fine wine. My package arrived late, in a taped up and misshaped resemblance of a cardboard box, and appears to have been delivered by Ace Ventura himself after being kicked down the street and closed in the door once or seventeen times. Every other helmet I’ve owned wants you to replace it after a big impact of some kind. By the looks of box this thing came in and how the packaging inside that box looks, it should probably head straight back for the warehouse it came from for warranty replacement. Unfortunately, I need to use this tomorrow (thankfully it arrived late but ‘on time’ still) and don’t have the time to return it and get a replacement that isn’t scraped and scarred like I’ve been climbing with Alex Honnold for the last few years. This is not an issue with Black Diamond and the quality of their product, this thing is bomber and looks really sweet. Amazon in the other hand, if you need tonight see more than a roll of packing tape to fix a box that has been destroyed and it’s contents falling out, cut your losses and send a new item to your customer. I would have been embarrassed to deliver this package if I was the driver. Maybe that’s why he delivered it to the wrong house, thankfully I have good neighbors and this thing is ready to protect my head from whatever is falling from above.

Good hard shell
I used the previous gen Half Dome for the last four years. It got heavily abused - many hundreds of big days cragging, doing first ascents, being jammed into a pack with 40 pounds of gear, etc. During all that I burned through 8 ropes, three harnesses, a pile of draws and gear (and countless TC-Pros, ouch). But the helmet held up great, finally the hard harness straps are getting a bit bent and kinked. I replaced it with this current generation, and so far I'm very happy with it. In several respects I like it better than the old model - the harness is more stable, the straps don't pinch the ears, and it has a bit more ventilation. I like the way it rides and when I'm climbing I forget I have it on. It's too early to know how it's going to hold up to my abuse, but it seems very quality and rugged. Half Domes are a bit on the heavy side but I've not seen a light helmet I'd trust to take the trashing I give them. BTW, this new helmet weighs 1/2 oz more than my old Half Dome according to my scale. Like the old Half Dome the shell is pretty thick and I have confidence it will resist penetration by pointy things.

my helmet isn’t just part of my gear — it’s my lifeline
10/10 – Tough, Lightweight, and Cave-Proof I’m a spelunking guide and use this helmet for hours every week underground. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and fits securely even during climbs and tight crawls. After months of scraping against sharp rock, it’s still in great shape. If it can survive caving, it can handle anything.

Amazing helmet for climbing! Has already saved the noggin quite a few times!
I purchased this helmet for outdoor climbing. My favorite parts about this helmet when originally purchasing were: - The cheap price point compared to other helmets of the same quality - The stylish design when compared to other helmets in the same price range - The very light weight profile - The ability to hold your helmet light up - The ability to save my head from disaster After having purchased and used the helmet a few times, I would say that one of my favorite things about it is definitely the light profile. I have found that I forget that I'm even wearing the helmet sometimes! It is very comfortable and the ability for it to fit most sizes of heads is also pretty wonderful. Be cautious when looking into sizing. My girlfriend was purchasing the purple version of this helmet and believed she would be a small. When actually trying on the small at a local REI, we were really glad we checked it out first. The small is definitely for the head of a child! Medium is likely applicable for most people who don't have a very small or very large head! I honestly have no cons that I can come up with for this helmet as of yet. For the quality and price, and a name brand like Black Diamond, you really can't go wrong with this! Get out there and climb some rocks!

It's good
Well designed and a clean attractive build. Size S/M has excellent fit on my size 7 head. Dial-in fit nice. Secure, stable and comfortable. Rigid foam liner about 1.13" at crown and .5" at sides. No gap between liner and shell. Not overtall on head. Foam padding velcrowed so removeable to wash. Straps riveted, liner appears removeable. If a light mounted, its strap covers 7 vent holes. Actual weight 12 oz (341 g), not the claimed 9 (-1 star).

Protection for your Noggin
I bought this helmet to protect my head in case I would fall while hiking. I recently started taking blood thinners. On a recent hike, my foot slipped and my knee hit a rock, not really all that hard. Due to being on the blood thinners, my knee really swelled up. After five weeks it's still not back 100%. My doctor suggested I stop hiking, which I do for landscape photography. I asked if wearing some protection on joints and my head would be OK. "It will help." So I looked around and found this helmet. Black Diamond makes quality products. I use their trekking poles and love them (except for the tips which keep falling off). Yes, I look like a dork hiking on trails with it on. But better look like a dork than not use and hit my head, which could really be bad for me. It fits very well. There is a tightening mechanism in it so you can customize your fit. I think it would provide adequate protection. It does seem to get warm inside though. I'd recommend them for what I do. I can't talk about protection for rock climbing though.

Black Diamond Half Dome 👍
I’m headed to Zion National Park over Labor Day weekend so I’m adding some climbing gear to my camping kit. Black Diamond seems to be a reputable/popular brand based on their end-user product reviews and Instagram profile. I mistakenly ordered the S/M instead of the M/L size initially. Though the internals adjusted enough for a comfortable fit the S/M shell sat ridiculously high on my head. Fortunately it fit my cousin who is also going on this trip so I gave him that one and ordered the correct size. My research has informed me that the primary purpose of a “Half Dome” climbing helmet is to protect the top of your head from falling rock that might be inadvertently dislodged by your rope or a climber above you. Side protection is present, but minimal. The thickness of the top of the helmet is pretty intense, so it still sits pretty high on the head. I sent a photo to Black Diamond on their Insta account and asked if the fit was correct and they never responded, but the fit I’m experiencing seems to correlate with images on their account. It’s seems really well designed and well constructed. I’m pleased.
