Excellent work that details the specific cultural and artistic influences that converged to create that unmistakable Art Deco style. 40 sections written by an equally diverse group of authors perfectly balance text, photos, and illustrations to entertain, and above all, inform the reader. Enlightening for art lovers and historians alike.

What a hefty and intense book - bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who is really into Art Deco. We found this amazing antique store a few years back and I was so impressed with the artistry of this period. Unfortunately I'll never be able to afford the actual antiques from this store, so this book will hopefully be appreciated nonetheless. Huge book with extensive documentation of this fabulous time period!

This is one of the best, if not the best compilations of the Art Deco Style. From it's initial beginnings in France to it's global influence spanning decades, this compilation of articles provides an extremely thorough education into the beginnings, development, and legacy of the period.The book is set up with five section: Introduction, Sources and Iconography, The Paris 1925 Exhibition, The Spread of Deco, and the Deco World. Within each section are in-depth articles written by multiple experts within each branch of the Art Deco spectrum. Arranged by subject as well as chronologically, each article traces the development of the Art Deco style while concentrating on a particular subject such as architecture, glass, fashion, jewelry, etc.I appreciate the thoroughness of each and it speaks highly of the editors that the articles reference one another, often cross referencing critical images and themes. As with any discussion of a design language, images are critical in establishing a reference point on how the style developed and evolved. This book is profusely illustrated with excellent examples of created works and sketches. However, my only criticism would be that a small amount of important works mentioned are not illustrated. Perhaps the logistics of which would have been an even thicker tome, but maybe it's best left to an updated publication or to the reader to further their own research leading to an even more fruitful understanding of the style.There are, of course, more thorough books on particular elements, but overall, this publication is essential if you want to understand in-depth the background, influences, created works, and lasting legacy of the Art Deco and it's contribution to the design dialog of the 20th century.

This is a great collection of beautiful art of the Art Deco period. Lots of colorful, glossy photos and good information on the history of this genre and time period of this art style.

Top notch .. to be expected from the V. and A.

We have an Art Deco reception room which my wife decorates so I bought this book for her to look into the history of the movement. This book has incredible colour pictures, lots and lots of pictures. If you want to have an indepth view of Art Deco from around the world then you will want this book. If you are impressed with books with tons of pages then this is for you as well, 464 pages full of info, no padding. If you just want a coffee table book to impress whomsoever then yes you will definitely want this book too.

A form of art that spans ancient Egypt upto the start of the 2nd world war. It includes architecture, fashion, jewellery ..... a wonderful book. A little heavy for bedtime reading, if you are over 50, but a nice heavy weight book if you are interested in an age of distinctive and wonderful creativity. Art Deco stands head and shoulders above all that 60's and 70's art work (no names mentioned... but obvious)

I've had quite a few books on Art Deco and this one stands out above the others, beautifully and extensively illustrated.

The book is very comprehensive and from what I can see a very nice work. I chose a used edition which sadly is let down by the condition. It is not as described by the seller.
