Not what I expected from a DMT product
I've been using DMT plate sharpeners for years now and have been very happy with them . I purchased this one to help in sharpening a recurved blade (a small blade) Once I received it , I tried it out and found on the top of the curve (1/4" ~) , the diamonds imbedded wore off in a few minutes . compared to the flat plates I have, this one is a flail . I didn't send it back because of shipping costs . Not worth the price .I can still use this to help sharpen (except in that 1 area) , but better not buying any other recurved blades .I purchased a replacement DMT plate sharpener(at the same time) which is perfect ( 1 of my original DMT plates finally wore out in a few spots) the plate lasted for years working as it should for years.I guess it is hit or miss ....As to value for this sharpener ,for the total price I had to pay to import it ,plus tax , I would not purchase again ... Consider if it is worth risking your $$$ .Sorry DMT , I really like your products , but I have to call it like I see it ...

Decent "Stone"
I think a lot of the critical reviews of this product may be from folks who don't understand the use of diamond stones or who are looking for that "magic bullet" that's going to make them a better sharpener. This stone requires a short break in period, just like any other diamond stone, to get rid of any roughness or weird spots in the grit. I just used the round end of one of those cheapo wrenches that comes with furniture you need to put together. The rounded portions are meant to be a universal fit for all gouges, so you still need to understand the sweep on your chisel and what section of the stone works for that shape. Otherwise you'd need a separate stone for every chisel....not practical to say the least. My stone came with some scratches and raggedy spots that came out immediately when breaking it in. The side with the grit is the side with the mesh stamp and the DMT logo. My only complaint is that I wish they had the grit bonded to a heavier piece of metal. It's not flimsy and doesn't bend....I'm just used to the weight of my Ultra Sharp stones. I recommend this stone for those folks who are looking for that specialty stone to fill in where their flat stone is just a hassle. I'll still finish out with a 3000 grit flat stone, but this will get me there first.

This one blemished
As must occasionally occur even in controlled industrial productions, this item has a few signs of being a second quality, if that. First is a thumb sized area in middle concave zone which appears to have had a sticker or something that left a chemical stain and what looks like a residue of some kind, Secondly, the diamond grit across the surface is not consistent, and has areas overly built up and a few other places with seemingly little to no grit at all. Not saying it's unusable, only that for the money, and given that I own several other DMT stones which are first grade, I expected a better example of the "Wave".

Good sharpener - once I got my cheap gouges smooth enough.
Bought a set of low-cost gouges on Amazon, and found lots of machining marks on the inside (back of curves) that I have had to remove using the Scary Sharp method (sandpaper, wetordry p[aper, and round objects of various sizes. Now that I have these marks removed, the back and bevel are smooth enough to use this sharpener. It took me a while, and several failed ideas, before I figured out why the Wave-E wasn't sharpening my chisels. Now that I have a smooth surface to work with on the chisels, the DMT Wave-E makes the smooth surface on my chisels mirror smooth, and gives me a really sharp edge.Especially good buy when on sale. Helps get chisels shaving sharp. I just wish DMT made a larger diameter diamond sharpener. The diameter of the curve on my chisels is about 3-1/2 inches, and I have to work them side-to side instead of back and forth as in the instructions. This works really well on my smaller radius gouges.Worth the money.

Quality is there, but doesn't meet the hype
This sharpener was purchased so that it could more easily sharpen beading blades from combination blades. What I found was that there is very little area that the radius of your blade matches the tool. Obviously, this is so that a fairly short sharpener will accomodate from the largest to the smallest of blades/tools. While it makes sense on paper, it doesn't allow much room to work the tool before you are no longer in the radius that you need. I've since adapted a better system. That said, I use DMT products (stones) to sharpen both plane irons and chisels and have been very happy with them for a very long time. I'll continue to buy DMT, but this one just didn't match the hype in my opinion.Edit as of 12-12-12: I've learned a little trick that makes this product more useful than originally thought. Instead of trying to hone the bevel of a beading blade, I now flatten the back on a stone, turn it over and remove the slight burr of the bevel side on this product as though it were a simple slip stone. This makes it much easier, faster, greatly extends the life of the bevel and the iron is just as sharp.

Good sharpener for specific needs
This sharpener is good for those that use curved wood chisels. But I use it for my tactical knives that have recurves in them. I did not like the idea of using sandpaper on a curved surface since I could not gauge how even the surface was and I did not have anything that firm to put said sandpaper on to make a good sharpening surface. I bought this because I have used that other DMT sharpeners and love them. you would use this sharpener just like you would and other sharpening stone, so there is no new way to try and use this. I would not be able to use this on and serrated edges, however, because the serrations are too small for it. I have not seen large serrations that would fit the small end of this sharpener, so if this is what your needs are, I would stay away from this product. Overall it is very easy to use if you are familiar with any other sharpening stone system, especially the DMT stones, and works well with recurved knives to keep the recurved edge from becoming flat..

It's usable
As stated by others, the radius varies too much to use properly on most gouges, was also surprised at the metal thickness, thinner than I imagined it would be. My fault for not researching this more carefully.

Great for gouges up to 15mm.
Sharpening a #2 20mm is pretty tough. Should come with a video.

Bien pensé!
Outil bien pensé pour aiguiser les goûtes de sculpture. Les courbes servent autant à aiguiser l'extérieur qu'à ébarber l'intérieur de l'outil.
