My child is 5.5 yrs, would you recommend the 2-5 or 6-12? She is kinda in the middle. Thanks!

Personally, I would recommend the 6-12 . This is the size I purchased. They are snug on my just turned 7 great-granddaughter. She is on the small side for her age. They are double knit, but it's like one pair inside of another versus being knitted with 2 strands of yarn together. When taken off, the child needs to pinch the tips of fingers so the inner layer doesn't come out. Hope this helps you.

Are these water proof?

No. They are not; but they are resistant enough to play in the snow for short periods
