The Daltons Always on the Run (Lucky Luke)

Lucky Luke, the European comic cowboy, was a staple in my kids' early and mid-youth, and so, by extension, my early to mid-middle age.Finally, Luke has reached these shores. And now speaks English, too. So, as a surprise to my now mid-middle aged kids, I bought a couple so their kids could share in the joy. And reading them just brought back the intense pleasure I experienced when I read those comics in the late Sixties and early Seventies.They're a blast. Great stories, excellent drawings, funny and smart dialogues, Lucky Luke is a comic series to be enjoyed. Forever.

The Dalton brother's are always on the run but they are also hilarious and Lucky Luke along whit his horse and the dog... so funny. :)

This one was done pretty early in the series, and while the story and gags are fine, the images are not up to the standard of the later volumes from the 'Pilote' years and afterwards -- the strips are vertically much shorter than usual, making them appear thin and simplistic, while the colours have a crude garishness that is sometimes distracting. Not many people would read Lucky Luke for its aesthetic appeal, I guess, but this is a bit sub-par, if typical of the earlier Dupuis volumes. Shouldn't the original French title (Les Daltons courent toujours) have been translated something more along the lines of "The Daltons Still on the Loose" or "Still at Large"?

This book comes from the Goscinny/Morris hey day period when they were cranking out some of the best books that they wrote together, and this one is no exception. It is actually two stories back to back, the first being 14 pages being about a general amnesty which sets the Daltons free. The second more lively story, much longer from pages 15 to 46, features lots of mayhem with Apache warriors and the gloriously stupid dog Rin Tin Can and equally stupid Dalton Brother Averell who is mistaken for a clever sorcerer by the Apache warriors. A wonderful and classic addition to the Lucky Luke English translation collection.
