The Art of Hearthstone: Year of the Kraken

This volume has some of my favorite Hearthstone artwork because the expansions included are so visually different from one another. The creepy Old God designs, the flashy Karazhan artwork, and the Gadgetzan crime family concepts all look incredible. I really enjoyed how much behind the scenes material was included alongside the finished illustrations. There are sketches, alternate designs, boards, card backs, and plenty of development art that shows how ideas evolved over time. The print quality is outstanding and the colors really stand out on the page. The embossed cover also looks amazing in person and makes the whole book feel high quality. Definitely one of the best gaming art books I own.

This is the 2nd hearthstone art book released in the series, and while it has made some improvements over the last book - it is seriously lacking in content potential. I feel like im being overly picky with these books but i will explain why. Overall, it is an awesome book. The content that is included is hands down 5 stars. The quality of the book is great, the pages are thick, glossy and bright and really show off the artwork. The book cover is cool its kind of like a soft textured hardcover, feels nice when you are holding it. I reviewed the first hearthstone art book and the biggest issue with the production was that the binding was super shoddy - mine has since split in multiple areas which drives me crazy. They definitely upgraded the binding here and this book feels pretty solid, so thumbs up there. This book covers Whispers of the Old Gods, One Night in Karazhan and The Mean Streets of Gadgetzan. Each chapter covers a few pages (between 10-20 per expansion) of art from the pre release content and videos, it goes over logo concepts, card back and card pack concepts, playing board ideas, and some loose concepts for key figures in the expansion. From there, each chapter showcases card art - about 30 cards per expansion, usually laying out two cards per page with a few full page cards peppered in there. As per the last book there is a few cards that have a velum sketch overlay wich is really cool. The art is displayed well and really pops off the pages. Just to point it out again, the art that is included is wondeful and will be a cherished book in my collection. There are also some nice changes since the last book. Something that bugged me about the first book was that nearly a third of the book was devoted to the concepts of the playing boards, the card effects, and general ui layout. It was cool to look at once or twice but i would have preferred more art content. This book still showcases some of that, but it is much more condensed which is great and actually enjoyable to look over this time. Another thing that was kind of a small nitpick was that each card credited the artist but didnt state the card name - not a big deal but seemed like an oversight. Card titles have been added this time around. Glad to see those changes were made along with the better binding. Here is where my gripes begin. As far as content goes, it is a letdown in the sense that there is only a very small portion of the cards actually included. I love this game, and i love the artwork and i want to see ALL of the cards in large printed format. That may be asking a lot from a production standpoint, but as such a huge fan - i want it all. The Whispers of the Old Gods released with 161 cards split between collectible and uncollectible cards. That is so much art! One Night in Karazhan released with 57 cards and The Mean Streets of Gadgetzan released with 132. We only get to see 30 cards per release. Thats less than a quarter of the content for whispers and gadgetzan. To me, that is highly disappointing. They have some good cards on display, but some of my favorite cards are not included and thats a bummer. I understand adding all of the cards might be overkill but i think we deserve a lot more card content considering this is supposed to be an ‘art of’ book. The art of the Warcraft the Trading Card Game came in at a whopping 288 pages and showcases nearly the entire collection of the trading cards - i know the production is possible. I want that for these hearthstone books. So overall, love the book. If you like hearthstone or know someone who does, its a great book. Im an artist and it is so great to see the fine details of these cards. But Blizzard, if you happen to read this, please please please add more card content to the future books! Either way - looking forward to the future iterations.

If you are into video game art and like Hearthstone, the second book in the series will not disappoint.

Se lo regalé a mi hermano jugador habitual de HerthStone y le ha encantado. Las ilustraciones son chulísimas, es bien grande y la calidad es abismal. No sabía ni que existía este tomo. Hay 2 ya. Este es el más nuevo por lo que les recomiendo encarecidamente pillar el 1 tomo y este sacado a finales del 2019 ;)
