Not for grown ups or mature teens.
I bought this to supplement my daughter's studies in her Japan class in her freshman year of high school. It's a stocking stuffer for Christmas so I haven't given it to her yet. She is 14 and has been in AP class since 1st grade. She was reading at a 12th grade level when she was in 4th grade. I thought this book would be a fun break from the more academic books she uses in her class. However, this book is very child like in it's layout and artwork. I'm giving it 4 stars because it seems to be well done for what it is. But I think the 14-17 age limit is pushing it. This would have been a good book for her when she was 10. I'll let her decide if she wants to keep it or return it for something more mature. If she loves it I'll change it to 5 stars or let her write a review. I just wanted to give people a heads up.

Has 48 yokai and color art by Tatsuya Morino who was the assistant of Shigeru Mizuki
Lots of info on 48 yokai. Color art of the 48 yokai by Tatsuya Morino who was the assistant of Shigeru Mizuki for about 10 years. I heard Shigeru Mizuki had many assistants. Some of the color art are quite different from that of Shigeru Mizuki. The karasu tengu is bluish. The Hanadaka Tengu is reddish and has wings. Nurikabe wall has lots of feet. Obariyon is like a giant child. Nobiagari is a shadow person like the hawkman villain Shadow Thief.

Nicely formatted and nice illustrations
I bought all three of the books in this series as an introduction to Yokai and Yurei. These books are smaller than I anticipated, but they are nicely done. I really enjoy the illustrations. The paper weight and print quality are both very nice and give it a quality feel. Some of the information is a bit silly (purposefully), but I think they serve well as a light and fun introduction. It seems that this one has the most full page illustrations of the 3 books. There is an illustration for each entry. I love the formatting with the general stats on the first page, the adjacent page being the full color illustration, and then followed by 2 pages of information and photos (may include a couple relevant idioms or pop culture references, etc.).

A really fun primer on many Japanese monsters
Most Americans and Europeans know the classical western monsters, but if you want to explore those of other parts of the world, this is a great primer. it's not at all an academic tome; rather, it's simple, visual, fun, and, often humorous. It's not in-dept, but a very good introduction for both adults and children (those who are ok with scary monsters).I like to write fantasy and this adds another dimension to my possibilities of characters.I'd give this five stars except for the fact that it doesn't contain information on some of the more common (and well-known) monsters that I was interested in. Not a big deal, just mentioning that that was my one disappointment.

If you like Japanese culture, this book is for you!
What a great book! It completely submerses you the quirky mythology and folklore of Japan's Yokai. The information covers a wide variety of yokai from all areas in Japan, as well as gives people unfamiliar with the geography a great reference to consult with each entry. Written with a focus on entertainment and fun over academic presentation the information is lighthearted(but doesn't shy away from some cool gory details), engaging, and fluid. This book is the epitome of a page turner. If you don't find yourself loving this book more and more with each page I'd be very surprised. The great illustrations are an added bonus. If you're on the fence about buying this book, buy it!

Comprehensive and well-done
Finding books that are well-written (in English) on Yōkai is not an easy task. This book does that. There are many different yōkai covered and it is thorough. Well done.

a great book for fans of yokai
This is a beautifully illustrated book and the writing is excellent as well. My son checked it out from the library once and liked it so much we bought it for him as a Christmas gift. It's an great read for anyone interested in Japanese Yokai or if you just like cool artwork.

You're ok with yokai
Just like the other two books in the trio (Yurei attack and Ninja attack), this book is a feast of information about Japanese mythical(?) monsters, culture and folklore. It is written in a light-hearted, often tongue-in-cheek style and accompanied by some humorous artwork. It gets the message across and has plenty of references to other works should you wish to explore further. All three are fully recommended.

Superb! Highly recommended!
Absolutely amazing book. It did take quite a while to get here (around 3 weeks) but it was honestly worth the wait! Being interested in Japanese folklore, this is definitely one of my favourite books. Really interesting, data book style book about a wide range of popular and lesser known yokai. Super engaging, with really entertaining illustrations. Funny and informative. I would really recommend this to anyone interested in yokai and wanting an entertaining read! 5 star!

Great!
As an avid fan of manga and anime, I was interested in learning more about the monsters and mythology of Japan, and this book was brilliant! I brought this book at the same time as I brought 'Night parade of 100 demons' and it was interesting to cross reference the pair, as both had really good info on the subject, though this one stood out the most because of its layout and the amazing quality of the illustrations in it, as well as including traditional images alongside the ones done by the illustrator.Overall, a great read and thoroughly recommended!

Entertaining and well worth a read.
Such a well crafted book that I went and brought the other 2 in the series. Funny, Informative and with such an amazing style that it will have a place on my book self for a long time.
